My useage last year was 16834 gas and 2144 electric. I dread to think how much the gas is going to be this year. 3 bedroom 3 storey 3 year old house. 2 teenagers 1 8 year old and myself.

'Average' consumption is basically a load of !!!! and bull...unless you surveyed EVERY hosue in the UK and then did the maths.

ONE kilowatt hour TWO kilowatt hours THREE kilowatt hours...

Is this some old Labour in association with Sesame Street full employment strategy? Never mind statistical sampling - that's a cow-pat - you need to enumerate everything individually.

Now, if only these was a central database that collected consumption values from every house in Britain, and knew how many supply points this was from they could tell us exactly. We'd only need something in everyone's house that measured how much they used, people to collect this information onto the central database, and someone willing to do the maths......

As a webdesigner I have access to online servers and databases. If there was sufficient interest I could create a database that could be completed online for a number of different house types. Anyone could then enter their consumption figures, based on their property type. If there was sufficient replies some real averages could be determined.

Shout if you feel there is a need.
  • Interesting so much so this is my first post

I've been logging gas & electy reading for over 25 years now, in fact log most things car mileage consumption etc etc. gas & electy done on the 1st of the month for over 25 years

We've had the same house for 20 years yet our electy has gone up from ~3000 to ~5000 KWh per annum I put this down to a growing family now 3 adult kids. Electy consumption must be based on the number in a house extra washing drying, cooking trend for each person to have Xbox playstation, telly computer etc in there rooms. Also lot depends on occupancy have a "student" at home and its even more.

So I think there is a "base" level for stuff like fridge. frezzer, alarms, telephone charges, red light appications, after that base for common lights hall kitchen lounge, then consumption raises for each extra person ~ 500 kWh pa

Gas Central heating seems to stay the same, that depends on the weather.

... I think you missed the sarcasm. See post #5.

(Although it would have been more helfpul if SwanJon had extracted and translated some examples that a non-industry gonk could parse.)

    Yup, sorry.
There are indeed independent, central databases for gas and electricity that cover the consumption for every supply point in Britain - it's how the suppliers know how much gas and electricity they need to buy (well a part of it).
EnergyWatch (as was) gave the average consumptions as 20500 (gas) and 3300 (ele), and these are the values suppliers use when comparing prices (with other suppliers & before and after price changes)

'Average' consumption is basically a load of !!!! and bull...unless you surveyed EVERY hosue in the UK and then did the maths. I live in a 4 bed extended semi with 5 occupants (I seem to have 'acquired' a daughter I never had, my eldest son's girlfriend who clearly much prefers living here than she does her 'home', lol) and we use 15,000 gas and 6000 leccy. So, it could be said we are not using enough gas but using far too much leccy. Oh well..

The point of a survey is that you do a random sample, you don't need to survey EVERYONE. As we can see from this thread, 20,000 kwh seems about right for an average household - and since most of it goes on heating the house rather than cooking or bathwater for individuals, the number of people in the house doesn't make a lot of difference.

So a water bill of well over £2000?

    119.6 cubic metres I hope!!
