Do you have any Department for Work and Pensions or Jobcentre Plus contact centres near you? If so, they may be recruiting or about to recruit very soon. They often employ young people and give full training. Basic computer/numeracy/literary skills are necessary. They usually advertise in local press and Jobcentres. The drawback is that it is call centre work.
    Good luck!
  • is there anything in particular you wanted to do as a job?? great news about your cooking skills, can you not use this to make money like doing the buffet at family parties etc or making cakes (xmas, bday etc) to sell? i did a car boot sale once and just sold hm cakes and biscuits and made quite a bit!

HI Junior J- wish you lived near me-I'm always needing babysitters!!!!
    Debt-free...and staying that way...
  • Well done you. I worked loads when I was 16, saturday, sunday and evening job but I think it's harder nowadays.

My nephew (18) has just got loads of work thru an agency for waitering/washing up etc etc for the christmas period. Might be worth ringing round local agencies to see if they take on 16 year olds for this kind of thing. If you haven't already, put a few cards up in newsagents windows advertising your babysitting services. You could make a fortune this time of year. There may even be a babysitting service (see yellow pages) near you which you can sign up with. My only other advice to you......NEVER EVER EVER start smoking! Gauranteed to make you poor for ever more.

    Hello all!

Thanks again for all the tips

Schoolrunmum , where are u relocated , im in the waterlooville/portsmouth area. I wish i lived near to you to!

I probably babysit maybe 3 times a month , for two different families.

I had another look around so far no good. This year with the credit crunch , people are not wanting to take on more employers..

Its just a case of keep trying which i will.

I am very overweight and i think this could affect people taking me on , they would want a fit , healthy , good looking sort of person to help show there standards if u know what i mean , maybe im wrong but i do beat myself up about that.

Keep trying Jess, and don't get disheartened by not finding anything, it always takes a while and in this market it will taken even longer unfortunately.

And don't think that your weight will put them off, just go in with a positive attitude and a big smile and it won't even be an issue. It will only be an issue if it decreases your confidence, so don't let it :).

Have you tried signing up with agencies? Get your CV really good and send it to all the relevant employment agencies in town. They might have things like one-off kitchen/waitressing jobs for events, and that way you can get a bit of experience behind you which will help you find other jobs.

good luck with the job hunting. I don't live that far from you but as my son is 3 years older than you I don't need a babysitter. How about dogwalking/pet sitting?

  • I must say I'm so impressed that at such a young age you've got such a great head on your shoulders - if only I was as smart as you at 16!

Your a great example to other young people!
