How refreshing for a retailer to care enough about its customers to respond directly to their comments. Welcome to the forum, richer sounds.

Not that refreshing as they use a rip off revenue sharing 0845 number to contact them on!!

If any customers are experiencing difficulties whilst trying to purchase a particular product then please contact me via this forum, our Customer Care team on 0845 900 1230, where we will be happy to do everything we can to help.

A bit rich,(no pun intended), for you to quote your rip off premium rate revenue sharing number on a money saving site that dislikes that type of number

Why not use a normal geographical number, or the more user friendly 03 numbers, Oh I know why not, no revenue share on those numbers!

Please don't try and inform us that they are "local rate" as that definition is illegal, ( under Consumer Protection Act 1987 Part III, Misleading Price Indications), and goes against Ofcom, Trading Standards etc rules.

• Got to say that I've just bought a Samsung 40" 100Hz LCD TV from Richer Sounds in Glasgow.

Price in shop was £749.95, plus 10% for 5 year guarantee. Said that it was slightly more than I wanted to pay and the chap said, what if I could do a deal on the guarantee.

I said, ok, what can you do? he went and spoke to the manager and the upshot was, £70 quid off the telly, giving a total of £747.95 for the telly with a 5 year guarantee.

Can't speak highly enough about the service, and will definately be back for further purchases - they even paid for my parking. (Ok, it was only 90p, but every little helps :T )
Wha's like us - damn few, an' they're a' deid

I got a price match on a Panasonic TV at John Lewis in Milton Keynes about 9 months ago. It took about a week while their 'reductions' team checked it out but I saved about £150 on the JL in store price and got their 5 year G'tee as well without any trouble.
As for Richer Sounds, I've purchased several items from them in the past and always received good service and prices. OK, sometimes they don't have every advertised item in stock but which store always does?

For anyone in the Manchester area I recently got JL at Cheadle to price match with Empire Direct who have an outlet in Burnage. This was on a TV so got the 5 year guarantee and saved just short of £100 on the price. It took a couple of days wait. JL at the Trafford Centre would not match with Empire Direct (not nearby).

I've just attempted to price match a 19" TV between Richer Sounds and John Lewis. They both had stock.

Armed with a print out from Richer Sounds website, I asked for a price match. John Lewis were £224 - Richer Sounds £179.99.

The sales guy gave me the option of reserving the item while he sent the price match form off to head office for clearance which could take 5-7 working days. Or I could pay the full price and they would credit my card once the price match had been confirmed.

I choose to pay in full and take the TV.

When he was filling in the form, he noticed that Richer Sounds with 5 year warranty was £197.90 not £179, so he started to fill in the price match for the higher figure. I stopped him and said the price was £179, but he claimed it had to be a like for like match.

My reply, was that JL advertise the 5 year extended warranty for FREE, so unless he's telling me that it isn't FREE and it's worked into their prices, then the lower figure is the standard TV price. I also pointed out that under the Sale of Goods act, I'm covered for up to 6 years irrespective of any extended warranty they claim to be adding for free. This would also be the case if I bought from Richer Sounds.

He half agreed I was right and put the lower price on the form and said he'd leave it upto head office to work that out.

So now I've to wait a week or so for them to clear the price-match and re-credit my card. In the meantime, the TV is staying sealed as if the price match is rejected, it's going back as an unwanted Xmas pressie.
R U Claiming that the SOG act is as good as a warranty?

I got JL to price match my 40" sony tv about 9 months ago. They had it advertised for £1100 but 2 stores I had found had it in stock for £859 and £899.

When I rang the number to start the process of price matching I told the lady about one of the shops and she said she would check it out. I got a call back about 2 hours later saying they didnt have it in stock but she could recommend a different shop with a similar price.

She told me about sound and vision who were doign the tv for £870 which was actually cheaper than my back up store.

Got the tv 4 days later and ahd no problems.

Personally I think the service was really good.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Better having a warranty, but under SOG act you can claim but it may require you have the fault repaired yourself and then claim the cost back through the small claims court.

Regarding my Richer Sounds Price Match - Just got a letter from John Lewis and they are only matching the price that RS offer with the 5 year warrany. ie. £199.00

The letter reads:
Dear Mr xxxxx

Thank you for recently letting us know that the Sharp LC19D1E-BK 19" LCD IDTV is being offered at Richer Sounds for £179.99 compared with £224.00 at John Lewis Sheffield.

We have checked the information you have given us and found that Richer Sounds are charging £199.95 for the Sharp LC19D1E-BK 19" LCD IDTV, as a result we have reduced our price to £199.00. We have credited your VISA card with £25.00 representing the difference in price.

We work to ensure that all our prices remain competitive and are greatful when customers take the trouble to let us know if they see an item at a lower price.

Your sincerely,

Undersale Department.

So they're matching with the price that Richer Sounds charge with a 5 year warranty

Even then, they're £1.10 out in their calculations. Richer Sounds charge £197.90 not £199.00 as they claim.

Dear Derrick

Thank-you for your comments about our telephone number although I’m sorry you feel we are trying to generate extra revenue from our customers! Certainly this is not the case and our 0845 number is not a premium rate number. The cost of calling an 0845 number from a BT landline currently costs just under 2 pence per minute.

Our customers are more than welcome to contact any of our 48 stores using their individual geographic telephone numbers which we publish in our catalogues and our website. Only our central Customer Care team have a non-geographic number for ease of use due to it being a centralised department.

Alternatively, any customers who would rather not call an 0845 number are free to e-mail our customer care team (on customerservices@richersounds.com) or to contact me via this forum. Alternatively our advisors are happy to call our customers back if this would be more convenient for them.

I hope this information clarifies your point although if I can be of any further help please do not hesitate to let me know.

Yours sincerely,

John Clayton
Operations Director

They cost up to 40p per minute from a mobile,(depending on network),11p per minute from a call box and only BT cahrge 2p per minute,(still don't know why they did this, certainly not for consumer benefit), ALL other telcos charge more than BT!

They are NEVER included in phone packages, meaning that callers will always pay for them even though they have paid for a call package, reason is that there is revenue sharing on these numbers and if the recipient does not take it, then the telco keeps it all!

Your centralised call centre is no reason to use a PREMIUM rate number,(yes they are), because only BT charge at 2p, ALL others charge more than a geo call making them a premium call.(look up the word premium in a dictionary), you can receive all features for call centres on 01/02/03 numbers, you do not need premium rate numbers, if you are not receiving any financial incentive,( which I doubt bearing in mind "finacial incentive" does not have to mean a cheque each month, it can be in the form of subsidised outgoing calls, free or subsidised switchboards etc), then you are letting your telco keep all the revenue, if that is the case then more fool you!

Take a look at the http://www.saynoto0870.com/ site to see the wickedness behind these numbers, go to the discussion forum on that site for more info on the use of these numbers.
The only people who attempt to justify these numbers are the people that use them!

Also your comment "or to contact me via this forum." has only just come to light as you have only just joined and may not have been made if I had not made the above comments, and whilst the invitation is welcome, how many people will not know about it?

Maybe you could supply the geographical number that lies behind your 0845 number for people that want to contact your call centre but won't use 0845 numbers?
Please don't tell me there isn't one, as that is how these numbers work!

Dear Derrick,

Thank-you for your reply to my previous post. Whilst I feel the conversation has drifted "off-topic" I wanted to take the opportunity to answer your additional queries.

You are correct in stating that the call charges do vary depending on which telephone provider customers choose to call from and indeed this applies to any telephone number not just our 0845 number and with respect it is not our fault or responsibility what mobile phone providers and other phone company’s charge their customers. Having one number (0845) is for the convenience of our customers and is certainly non profit making.

We have been listed on the "say no to 0870" website for a number of years now for any customers who would rather not dial an 0845 number and I am happy to confirm the geographic telephone number is 0161 474 6829.

I would also like to reiterate that all of our stores have their own geographical telephone numbers which we publically advertise and encourage our customers to use to contact us. Our stores individual contact details can be found on our website at http://www.richersounds.com/information.php?cda=storefinder.

I trust this information helps.

Yours sincerely,

John Clayton
Operations Director

Thank you for your response and the confirmation of the 0161 geo number.

However it does not detract from the fact that you do not need a premium rate 0845 number, you could just use your 0161 number or one of the newer 03 numbers that cost the same as 01/02 numbers and are included in phone packages including mobiles.

Whilst your comment; - "it is not our fault or responsibility what mobile phone providers and other phone company’s charge their customers." is true, it is your "fault and responsibility" to choose an 0845 premium rate, revenue sharing number for your call centre, and for anyone not knowing your geo number they will have to call the expensive number from a mobile, payphone or landline.

Best solution to confirm an ethical company? Ditch the 0845! If you receive no benefit from it? then stop your telco receiving the benefit and use a geo number!

• I saw a Panasonic TX-32LZD81 32" LCD integrated freeview and freesat 1080 tv in Richer Sounds Stockport for £499.95 and a further £49.95 for a 5 year guarantee which i thought was reasonable. Went down the road to John Lewis Cheadle and the same TV was £780. I asked them to price match to the leaflet i had from John Lewis and i was told they would check the details and call me within 48 hours. The next day the rang me to confirm they would price match the TV and give me the 5 year guarantee and deliver for £499.95.

Its now sat on its stand looking fantastic !!!

Cant knock the service at all from John Lewis and the Panasonic TX-32LZD81 is excellent
