Buyers not paying by methods you have stipulated...

Hi Everyone,

I'm having a small problem with one of my buyers and wondered if I could have your opinions on the matter.

I sold an item on Sunday and in the description it states that I only accept payment via Paypal. The buyer then paid by echeque, now they seem new to Ebay (they only have 5 stars), so I cancelled the echeque and sent her an email stating that I do not accept them as they take too long to clear.

Today I got home to find that they have paid again by echeque! Despite my email. I have cancelled it again and sent another email explaining why.

My question is: Am I being petty? I did not put that I don't accept echeques just that I only accept payment via Paypal, which I think she did, technically. I'm just a miffed that she ignored my email and paid how she wanted anyway!

If she pays via echeque a 3rd time should I just accept it for a quiet life?

Thanks xxx

An echeque is payment through Paypal, is just takes a longer time to come through than when it comes from your card or Paypal funds.

If they are new, they probably won't even know is is going through to you as an echeque so I'd just accept it.

Make sure not to post anything until the echeque clears, as sometimes it doesn't
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T
  • Thanks Shellsuit, I do agree and I'll follow your advice.

I have had a few buyers recently that have won an auction that stipulated Paypal only and have sent postal orders!

Maybe I was taking it out on this most recent buyer.

I always pay by paypal, but twice (separate occasions) it went through as a echeque, I have no idea why, I wasn't aware of selecting this.
I thought it was an ebay/paypal glitch the second time & asked the seller if it had happened on other sales, but they said no.
Maybe thats whats happening to your buyer?
  • Thanks everyone,

I think I'll give her a chance she probably is making a genuine mistake, although it wouldn't kill her to respond to my emails!!
  • Why do you say that? I sent her 2 emails explaining exactly why I was cancelling the echeques, as she is new and maybe didn't understand. But she didn't respond and paid the same way again. To which I sent another email with further explanation.

If they are having trouble understanding what I meant why dosen't she repond to my emails?

To be fair it sounds like you was nasty to the buyer

Doesnt at all, even if it was just a misunerstanding surely she could've just replied to the email explaining why she used a e-cheque instead of 'instant' payment?

Did you send her a actual email or was it through the messages system of ebay? She m,ay not have actually checked her email and just sent another e-cheque without knowing why the other was cancelled.
  • I have had two people send me postal orders - which it states clearly I don't accept. Returning them seemed petty but I was not happy. However, I can top that today. 9 days ago I sold an item, sent off the invoice. No response. 5 days later sent another e-mail asking if they still wanted the item and to let me know what was going on - no response. So I decided to contact e-bay. Said I had sent 2 e-mails that had not been responded to. Today I get a message via e-bay off the buyer saying they are "furious" , that they sent off payment at the end of last week and "talk about vultures circling"! I have responded that I had sent them 2 e-mails both of which they had ignored and hadn't even had the manners to tell me they wanted to pay by cheque. I have told e-bay I regard the response off them (all in CAPITALS I might add) as abusive and nasty (and have actually told the buyer that I though that). To be quite honest I don't feel like selling the stuff to them now. Am I being over sensitive or not? It's not like I didn't contact them. I'm beginning to think I'm going to stop using e-bay as it's getting full of non-payers and people who are not very nice.
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

Buyers often have no choice - no-one likes paying with an echeque but sometimes it's unavoidable.

  • Hi alison999, I sent it through Ebay.

I've just check Ebay again and she's paid again via echeque!
