  • I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Having said that though, its a stupidly old law that badly needs updating.

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

straight off the Direct.gov.uk website so looks like merseyrail owe me a appology. In case anyone finds this thread from googling a similar situation here is the link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10034732

    Well done for finding that.

However - and just to be devil's advocate - you did have a licence, so would it be possible for merseyrail to check that you had one and were simply not displaying it, rather than waiting for one to arrive in the post?

    Just a thought.

By your own admission, you forgot to display a valid road licence.

The police have better things to do than try psychicly to wonder if you had bought one, and were keeping it in your glove box!

Just pay the fine, and don't forget to display it next time x

His ticket said ' not having a valid licence'

the offence he committed was not 'not displaying a ticket' he wasnt being done for that so doesnt have to pay it cos they didnt catch him or note that it was that offence.

The police can find out in seconds if the tax is paid up as well as they can with insurance, MOT, driving licence etc. They didnt do anything except look at the dashboard.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The Tax disc is a "Veichel excise license" isn't it?

It is still an offence to not display a valid tax disc so to speak

I admit i should have had it on display, but as pointed out on the directgov website i have 5 days grace. So what i would expect merseytravel to give the same 5 days before issuing a fine.

From speaking to the DVLA they stated the only people who could issue a fine relating to road tax would be local council, police and DVLA. So i am a bit confused how they thought they could issue a fine.

ceebeeby the whole point of this site is moneysaving, by paying the fine i wouldn't be doing that...

It probably takes 5 minutes to write the ticket out. It takes 30 seconds to do a PCN check on the car.

Which do you think the police would rather do?

OP, who issued the notice? And is it called a penalty notice? And are there any signs at the station, stating that parking on the land is subject to railway bylaws?

it was merseyrail, never noticed any signs but will have a look tommorow. it is a penalty parking ticket £60
  • I was fined the day it ran out and I was parked behind the Post Office buying the new disc, it must have been 30mins between leaving the car and returning, this car park was a free car park so not as if anyone was checking for a valid parking ticket.

I paid it beacuse i was in the wrong but my pc mate said i could have challenged it and most the likly outcome would have been it was written off!!

I always make sure i get way in advance now, x
