Did you know that you can use the bath foam as hand wash if you put it in one of those dispensers?

A swimming hat doesn't keep your hair dry so the chlorine still gets on it.

Wetting your hair thoroughly before diving in helps as dry hair is very absorbent (which is why it's longer wet than dry). I usually apply a little bit of conditioner to my hair as well to help block out the chlorine.

We use bath foam as shower gel, I tend to use the shampoos that nobody seems to like as a handwash, if we run out of that bath foam would still do the job, they all seem to be roughly the same ingredients, I think it's probably the ingredient proportions that differ (probably more water in the bath foam etc)
  • I used to wash my hair daily but it's very boring to dry and then my hairdresser suggested washing it every other day but on the 'day off' tying it back and just washing the fringe as this is what gets greasiest. Works a treat - hair looks freshly washed is in much better condition from not over washing.

Was also reading the other day that most people use too much shampoo....you only need to start with a 10p size dollop and add more 5p size dollops if needed.

Using both these tricks I'm using loads less shampoo (better for environment).

I also recommend Boots own range - Camomile & Lemon (?) one is lovely for blonde hair. It's just over a quid a bottle but *always* on BOGOF or similar.

I have just started with the "no poo" method and I am five days in. I opted for the "water only" method as to me adding bicarbonate and apple vinegar is still messing with my oils and other natural hairy things.

I have brown hair with a slight red tinge to it up to my waist and it is very thick.

So far (five days in) I'm a bit greasy at the top but nothing super noticeable. I have been brushing with a boar bristle brush to bring the oil down and I am slowly noticing my hair become less dry in the length (about 1/4 way down now). The main reason I thought I'd try this is whenever I was my hair with shampoo, even though i condition it and tried loads of different shampoo/conditioners my hair is always dry and slightly fizzing on washing day and then lovely (I.e. Not so dry and no frizz) on day two as I washed my hair every other day.

I will keep adding updated and we'll see if this works out!

Hi redscarf, how are you getting on? Funnily enough, I read of this method - with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar the other day and was wondering if I dared do it. So I will be very interested to read your updates.

I'm glad to see this thread I started ten years ago has been resurrected! I'm now sufficiently bald enough to warrant a grade one buzz cut all over and haven't used shampoo for ages - just a quick rub of my head with soap!

Well it's been exactly two weeks today and what a (greasy) journey it has been! After about day 4 I have not been able to wear my hair down without looking like that girl from The Ring. I have been washing (with water only) about every three days at night and letting my hair air dry which takes till morning unfortunately. I've also been scritching (basically give myself a head massage) and preening and brushing with a boar bristle brush as recommended from various only sources.

I am quietly pleased with the results so far. I'm still wearing my hair up but for the last three days I seem to be getting less and less greasy. My hair length seems less dry up to the shoulders as the natural oils are yet to get to the tips I of my hair.

The rest of my leftover shampoo will not go to waste as I was my brush every other day with it.

Will post again in a few days!
