If it is a balanced flue boiler, fumes will not be the main problem
Personally I disagree, as if the boiler hasn't been serviced regularly there is no way of verifying the integrity of the case seal, and balanced and fanned-flue boilers with faulty case seals can be extremely dangerous (especially those fanned that operate under positive pressure). The sooting on the heat exchanger is likely to have been the result of incorrect combustion in the first place, which could itself be caused by a faulty case seal. In these kind of cases you have to assume everything is a risk.

However I think we can all agree that it should be turned off immediately.
  • The heating engineer has just been. He is a neighbour.

He says the yellow flame is due to the soot build up because of years of neglect and no servicing :o

Its a GLOWORM boiler which he says is easy to service and he has serviced many.

Luckily he has offered to do it for me although he says we are not in any danger as the fumes cant get inside.

So a big THANK YOU to all your replies and heres hoping you have a very good day.

Thank you thank you thank you

  • We have had the boiler serviced, apparantly it has not been done for many years. So now the boiler is fixed, it needed a thorough servicing, and is working perfectly.

However, due to the build up of soot over the years, when the casing was taken off, it virtually exploded soot all over the house. The insurance people are coming to survey the damage tomorrow. Cream carpets, cream leather suite, cream leather dining chairs - well they used to be cream!!!

Not been on MSE over the past week cos I have been too busy trying to clear up the mess.

New Years resolution to have the boiler serviced on a regular basis :o

Thanks again for your advice. :T :T special :A to Bruce for the e-mail
