    true,

do sata disks come with different cable connectors as the connectors on my motherboard are different to the ones in your picture you posted earlier

(nb my motherboard is a asus p4sd-la)
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • according to HP it has 2 sata connectors which would need a different cable to the ide drive you already have, and a different power adapter (new PSUs usually have at least 1 sata connector, and you can buy molex>sata adapters cheaply

im wondering if its a combination of both as the psu is only 250W and the hard drive has an error with SMART, so i was looking at changing both

    Crazy trying both Robnye
Get the hard drive up and running, and if you STILL have issues, THEN buy the PSU
PSUs are very easy to fit, literally unscrew and unclip the old one and refit the new one
If your after a sata hard drive (If indeed you motherboard can/does allow them), make sure the PSU has at least one sata power cable on it (And youll need to buy a lead from the motherboard to your new sata hard drive)

A 250w psu is very low powered, I'd change that to at least a 400W, regardless of anything else you think you have issues with.

When buying PC components, there's usually 2 types mentioned; OEM is one which usually means it's a little cheaper, but doesn't normally come with screws/cables/install guides/discs etc.. and then there's Retail, which should come with everything needed to install it inc. screws/cables etc. but can cost a little more. Worth enquiring before buying exactly what you'll get.

Not all SMART errors/warnings indicate that the drive needs replacement. Have you got any further details of the error? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. includes a good explanation and a link to a comparison of various tools to get more detailed data: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_S.M.A.R.T._tools

Some attributes merely indicate the drive is entering 'old age' and parts may be beginning to wear out, some indicate temporary problems which are completely fixable, and some indicate failure and/or data loss may occur at any time (or has already done so).
