when i was claim JSA i had to wait over an hour each time just to sign a bit of paper. Sure it was annoying, but if thats what i had to do to get my money then i would. I was just greatful to be getting some income. Lets face it, an hour every 2 weeks isnt much.

I dont think the staff you see face to face are meant to help you find a job- thats what their call centre and website is for. The staff in the jobcentre are there to make sure you are looking for work and are therefore entitled to continue recieving your benefits. Thats what i always thought anyway.

Same here. I wouldn't rely on them for looking for work. They occassionally print off a job you could easily print off yourself. But they're useless at it. Today they printed off a job I am nowhere near qualified for!

They just have a silly system. My mum had to consult with them a lot in her work and she thinks the system's flawed.

I hate going to the job centre, well I hate not working. I finished uni this year and can't seem to find a job! Even retail jobs in which I've got lots of experience in. I think the employers think I won't be commited as my degree is in Media and I've applied to retail jobs.

I also believe that if you voted Labour in 1997 you are now reaping what you sowed. The issues facing the country are caused by financial mismanagement by this government and not buy what happened in America.

I trust you also believe that if you voted Conservative in the years before 1997 that you are reaping the second or third generation of welfare families who were urged to foster and fester on the dependency culture? I think you'll find the chronic long-term cost of their now ingrained Conservative-sponsored 'sickness' is a lot more expensive than this current acute short-term mess.

With Woolworths, I don't sympathise because a lot of people could see this coming. I knew when they shut the Leicester branch two years ago that the clock was ticking.

I know this is not in relation to the post. I know of a few other Woolies where I used to live closed down. From seeing the number of Burger Kings shutting shop - I reckon BK will be the next victim. I know of at least 7 places where BK has shut down and the premises still lie empty.

Companies don't start shutting down shops for the sake of it. There is a difference between companies shutting up shops, only to be moved to better and bigger premises and those who have shut shop for good.

After paying over £11 for 2 double burgers, 1 normal burger and fries, I wouldn't be sorry to see them go down.

I agree that these companies are closing for the sake of it. All these companies are quite happy making millions in profits when times are good. But the minute there's a struggle the shut up shop... well done to those who ride it and come out the other side.

  • Excuse me, this country did not choose who is supposedly running the country, it was passed by Mr Blair to Mr Gordon without any referendum.

This statement is so wrong on so many different levels! I don't think I have ever read anything showing so little in understanding of our political system as this.
  • Quite confused by many posts in this thread but i'll stick to the main ones :-
customer / client. There is no difference between them when assigning levels of respect. It certainly beats "Dolescum", which was quite popular in the 80s.

You sign on to claim benefit, you don't need to sign on to use the jobseeker facilities in the job center. There are few jobs and many applicants so helping yourself by going to university to study physics, biology, maths, engineering or chemistry to ride out 3 years of recession by adding to your debt in a productive way instead of trying to survive on JSA and housing benefit and raising the debt anyway ... may be a better option.
Effectively JSA is payment to you for seeking work, your job is to find other work in the 2 weeks between signing on. Spending an hour or two in the job center isn't fun but then again neither are most other jobs, so grin and thank yourself for living somewhere they pay more than minimum wage for that 1 hour per week.

To believe that any government has any control over "the economy" is nice but seeing as the international currency market is moving 3 times the GDP of the planet every day I suggest that the economy has very little to do with politics and frankly very little to do with the economy.

If you don't like the government, ignore them. If you don't like paying taxes then find a way to avoid paying them. If you want a job, make one.
