I work as a notetaker for students with disabilities. Basically I go into lectures with them at the local University and take notes for them. I love it - it is really interesting and there is the added bonus that I am learning something new all the time (well, most of the time - I must admit that final year solid state physics went over my head!). I think most Unis must have a similar service because of the disability rights legislation. You need to have a degree and also the firm I work for did a spelling check and handwriting test too.
I have worked as a Welfare Rights Officer but burned out and had a total breakdown and have never been able to work full-time since (that was about 12 years ago). After that I worked in an office as an admin worker but I hated it and nearly had another breakdown. So I am glad I have found this work. The hours vary and of course you don't get paid over the very long holidays. I supplement it by offering supported lodgings which is a fairly specialist thing.
I just about make ends meet, but I don't have a pension so plan b is to win the lottery. Ahem! I don't have any insurance either as I can't afford it. I do love my life but I worry about the future. If you have any kind of illness or disability your chances of earning enough for a decent pension can be slim, I fear (depends on the disability of course).Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Fascinating thread!
I am a stay at home mum with 2 boys, 4 and nearly 2, and am pregnant again. I earn some extra pennies (and I mean this literally) by selling on Ebay/ Amazon, but usually spend more than I earn on books and toys on Ebay/ Amazon for my children...
In a previous life I was a Computer Games Producer (for one of the big consoles), mainly doing kids games. I've been out of it for so long now that I haven't got a chance to ever get back into it, but it was great while I did it.
Once baby no. 3 is old enough I'd love to work for myself from home (not sure what though...) or maybe consider primary school teaching.0 -

I'm a NHS secretary... with a twist! I work the Homeless Health Service, which is 3 serviced combined, the Heath and advice for Single Homeless, Supervised Methadone and Resettlement Team, and Health Link. I'm paid £7.20 an hour, but I am temporary, if I wan permament it would be about 18 grand. I also reception in hostels on a ad hoc basis.
I've got a new permament job starting when my new crb comes back as a Support Assistant for Intensive Tenancy Sustainement, which basicly is floating support (support that comes to you at home) for people with severe mental health issues eg just been discharged from hospital or at risk of being admitted, it supports them around managing and sustaining a tenancy so bills, work, 'meaningful occupation' ect etc.
This wage starts at 14504, going up to 16000, but they expect you to be promoted to support worker within a year, which starts a 19500 and goes up to 22, senior support workers get paid 25-28k, and if you really go for it and become a homelessness prevention housing officer (immediate needs), then you get paid £30-35 an hour (as much as most nude models get paid, which was also a previous job!)Baby Mazza due New Years Day 2013!0
