Could you fit them yourself and were they expensive?

We had the loft insulation installers fit them for us for free but they must be cheap as there's hardly anything to them. They are a push fit to make gaps in the felt lining - an easy DIY job. :j
  • Ive just gone into our loft and its dripping wet.

Same as above we have just had lof insulated and cavity wall done.

Can anyone give any indication of cost for getting someone to install air vents? Im in Yorkshire.

Think i will get a dehumdifier tommorow in the interim to stop the whole roof rotting!

If you can get someone to get onto the roof it is a relatively easy job to do.

You can buy the vents to replace existing slates or tiles.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I;m getting worried now! I'm due to have cavity wall insulation and loft insulation does that mean i need to get vents fitted as well??? What is the likelyhood of my roof getting condensation? I'm only getting it done as my husband recently left and I thought it would save me some money on my heating bill with 2 young kids in the house.

Thanks - im rubbish with who to get out - would it be a roofer? Any wild stabs at prices?

Regards Julies question - it may well do - look at me!
To be fair im just glad i use the loft area as otherwise it may have gone unnoticed - the wood is wet through and i hate to think what could happen should it have rotted through

Edit - do you think it would help to leave the loft hatch open for a while?
  • Hi, If you've got condensation in your loft you can cure this by cross ventilating the roof space with soffit disc vents. These are approx 65mm diameter discs which fit into your soffit at approx 500mm centres apart. This will allow air to flow across the top of the insulation removing trapped moisture. You can fit these yourself by simply drilling holes in the soffit and screwing them in. You can buy them for a few pence each from most diy or builders merchants. Hope this helps.

  • We are about to move so went into the loft to rescue the boxes, it is dripping in there :o

Loft is insulated but not to current regs and there is loads of air in there - can feel the breeze but it is dripping - some of the boxes are soaked and wrecked.

Now this is odd, we have been here 8 years as has the insulation but this has never happened before :o

Moral of the story is never keep so many boxes in the loft, recycle binned most of them now ! Not sure what the issue is with the loft - most odd :o

Thanks for the suggestion deano. Was it an expensive job?

had one quote of £500 but managed to get mate of mate to do it for £300,,
but he also recemented the end gable where the tiles sit,,so i thought that was a good price,,not sure how long it took hoim as i was not around at time
  • . You can fit these yourself by simply drilling holes in the soffit and screwing them in.

if your house was built before 1999 the soffits may be asbestos insulation board. Probably best to check before you start drilling holes in them.

Just a theory but weve had no hot dry weather as such - just wet for months on end so nothings dried out in the summer our house is damp this year and have had a dehumidifier running for over a month now and at last the water collection is slowing down and house feels a lot better.
