ebay to be flooded with listings from diamond powersellers...

"eBay had announced a "Diamond PowerSeller" program in June, in which sellers who achieve $500,000/month in gross sales are eligible to negotiate with eBay on special pricing and other benefits. But with Operation Catalog, high-volume retailers or etailers can come into the program with little or no history on eBay. While eBay won't reveal details, sources have told AuctionBytes that Diamond sellers pay zero listing fees and receive heavily discounted commission fees."

"One source told us eBay would give such Op Catalog participants a grace period to conform to eBay's seller standards. Another source told us some participants are able to negotiate an "auto enhancement program" in which their average DSRs (customer ratings) would never fall below 4.6, which AuctionBytes has not been able to confirm."

So ebay's loyal existing customers get to compete with giant new sellers who don't pay insertion fees, get big discounts on fv fees and have rigged stars...

I believe that over on ebay.com BUY.COM have been upsetting other Powersellers. I think that ebay has even given the company the user ID 'Buy' or 'Buy.com'.

    B***ers!

    I think 2009 might be eBid's year ;)

They have failed so far to take much sucess from the problems ebay has been having this current year, I doubt whether they will bother doing anything different in future.

I list nowhere near as much on ebay as I used to due to a combination of issues , I gave up my account entirely on Tazbar and have also now pulled all my listings from ebid. Instead I found paid work outside the house to cover the loss of the income and actually work less than I used to. I can't imagine I am the only one who has given up on large scale internet sales.

eBid will have to be increasing the seller fees soon - their current business model can't support the selling cost v revenue, as well as their extensive advertising campaign.

I suppose they could always put adverts on the site - but we know the reaction that got on eBay!

eBay are encouraging more high volume sellers - it is much easier and cost effiective to manage 1000 sellers with 10,000 listings each, than it is to manage 1 million sellers with 10 listings each.

From an economic point of view the ebay plans make complete sense, just as you outline Steve, it is difficult to argue against them. It is just as a small seller it is hard to actually accept that they don't really want me, but I suppose the realisation will dawn on me soon enough.

Near my local Tesco there is an advertising hoarding with an ebay ad stating 'ebay are 25% cheaper than the high Street' the temptation to get a spray can and add 'on no they aren't' is really overwhelming.

As for ebid even some of their more loyal supporters agree that allowing the website ebid.com to be bought by a different company (that actually carries ads for ebay on their site amongst others) was unfortunate.

  • Totally agree that the "fewer sellers with more items" is the way eBay want to go.
Despite all the rule changes this year, I haven't really felt the eBay atmosphere has changed much, there are still plenty of individual sellers around.
However, I think when all the high street names flood eBay it will be noticably different, and it'll become very boring. Same old stuff, nothing different.

Which is why I think eBid might stand a chance next year, if eBay becomes so pointless for the small sellers that they either stop selling altogether or check out the competition.
I didn't know about ebid.com though, oh dear!

Tazbar... well, I signed up after the initial adverts, never used my account, but was keeping it open incase I wanted to give it a go. A month or two ago, I got a (non-Tazbar) spam email at the address I used to register my Tazbar account (and I ONLY have tazbar emails going to this address - I set it up especially). So, won't be using them on moral grounds! (Them selling my email address)
