BT cannot deliver Broadband

I would dearly like to save money by changing from dial up to broadband – even signed up with a provider who advised me that I could get it. Guess what, BT cannot deliver – the exchange is digital, BT measured my line it is within the 6K’s spec. but still unable to get broadband. Would appreciate any suggestions on what avenue I could pursue, I have been trying for the 18mths, hit a brick all the time. I can only use BT; I have no other provider locally, like NTL.

Hmmm, did they say why they can't deliver? Line distance is only one factor.

Last year, I arranged for an engineer install for our company who has a plant in the !!!!!! end of nowhere. This was about 7km away and was warned that it may not work. The engineer involved was very knowledgable and said 7km was the max distance and it was indeed touch & go.

It works fine. Speed is only 512Kbps and to be fair, have never tried to upgrade it. If your 6km then it should work too assuming the line quality is comparable.

No idea how you could force BT to have a go though if the computer says no. Maybe the provider you chose could be persuaded to spk to their BT account manager and get them to try an engineer based install on the understanding that if it don't work then you lose the cost for the engineer.

It can be because the exchange has reached its capacity. I had this problem when applying for Business Broadband.

Check out the Exchange Status Checker and locate your exchange and check what the status is.

With my business broadband it took a couple of months and then some room cleared and we finally got it installed.
  • Yeah I've had "...the exchange has hit capacity..." problems too. I had to wait 6 months before BT upgraded and I could be connected. That was the longest six months of my life ;)
  • Does anyone know if there are any routes at all to speed up getting broadband availability? Cannot believe there is no one to contact to push this. Have been waiting 18 months since BT said it was coming then an assortment of excuses but stillno broadband. Help.

From memory you need to get as many people as possible in the area to sign on the BT site to say they want BB and then once it reaches a certain percentage the area pops to the top of the list.

The people signing don't need to proceed with it icon7.gif

There is a thing called the extened reach programme where a BT ENG will come out and install a face plate and a good ISP should be able to arrange this, if this fails then i am sorry you cannot have DSL (at the moment). If the faceplate fails then you will not be charged or any charges will be refunded minus hardware charges if you have bought your own.

I used to work for an ISP back in 2005 (feb) so things might have changed?

All the other options are not so cheap...
