Serious gaming will be found in other consoles.
Ours gets well-used, even after 18 months.
I think most modern families need both consoles for different reasons.
I agree with you that if you have a gaming family, different needs are met with different consoles. My OH is a hardened xboxer and he tends to play serious stuff on there alone, we have a Wii for family games and even my 'too cool to spend time with the olds' 19 yr old son has joined in with the Wii family games and we've all been in hysterics at the end. It's about the only time the 9 yr old and the eldest 2 actually interact with each other.
We're a family of 5 and we started out quite happily with 2 controllers and 2 nunchucks (boxing for instance needs these to play....one set each). I kept an eye out for deals online or voucher codes and eventually picked up more controllers/nunchucks when I could get them cheap.
I got ours when they very first came out when I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, it's never had any issues and is on a reasonable amount.
I don't think you'd regret buying a Wii tbh.Herman - MP for all!

we have both the ps2 and the wii for the main tv, and the ps2 is the better one for games graphics, but for family fun, the wii, wins everytime, and kids of any age just love itenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0

I wouldn't say the PS2 has better graphics than the Wii, the PS3 yes. As for reliability ours is a year old nad we've never had a problem with it. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with a Wii, apart from GunJack.
You don't need connections on the front of your TV as the cable is long enough to reach the back and you don't have to have component either although it is the best quality connection. You can use Scart via an adapter (think it comes with one) or composite.
There are 'serious' games availble for the Wii if you want them but for proper serious gaming you need a PC. not an Xbox or PS3!
The extras you need to buy with the console are an extra Remote and an extra Nunchuck. A lot of people suggest buying Wii Play to get the Remote but we found Wii Play was pretty poor.
For games look at Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart (although then you'll want an extra Wii Wheel £10 ish, one comes with it), Lego StarWars/Indianna Jones/Batman, Mario Party and Brain traiong can be a laugh especially for adults when you've had a drink. It's my problem, it's my problem

Thats completely untrue Shaz
The Wii blows the PS2 away in terms of graphics.
Id guess your saying that as youve got the Wii playing through its original cable (Composite only) which is pants.:idea:0 -

"most".
Cheers. :rolleyes:0 -
i would say to go with the xbox 360
yes the wii has all the family interactivity, but the xbox 360 is starting to see that it also needs it too.
the xbox has release games like scene it, and lips, and are planning on making more games liek this which are for the family..
and then if you was to get bored of just family games you could buy some more intense games to play aswell.
the Wii's catalogue isnt very good even though the console is.
its all just built on a novelty which fools people into paying soo much more money for things what they could do for cheaper e.g wii fit.
also with the xbox 360 you can purchase films from marketplace and watch them straight from your xbox.
GET AN XBOX 3600 -
I have to disagree the wii is the next generation up from ps2
Whilst it is not high definition and in terms of eye candy it isn't as good as a xbox360 or ps3. The wii excels in terms of player involvement via the unique controller.
The wii appeals more to family interaction although I am sure there are some great family games on the other consoles
If the Op does get a wii, Mario kart is a must have.. you get a free steering wheel in which you place the remote inside. If you play two players you need another remote and nunchuck, you dont have to use the steering wheel. You can play this online for free if you have wireless access point via a router or wired access point I beleivewe have both the ps2 and the wii for the main tv, and the ps2 is the better one for games graphics, but for family fun, the wii, wins everytime, and kids of any age just love it0 -
How can you say the Wii's catalogue isn't very good there are hundreds of games out for it including some excellent ones.
If the OP's children are around 7 & 10 I would say the Wii is by far the best console. One other consideration is that out of my children's friends the most popular by far is the Wii, they all seem to have them (mine are 6 & 9).It's my problem, it's my problem

Sounds like you're a first time gamer so I would suggest the Wii. The Xbox 360 targets a mature, more experienced gamer. My kids love it but they've been playing video games since they were barely out of their nappies.0

Thanks again for all the valuable advice you have all supplied, much appreciated indeed :-)
I actually went out and bought a Wii this morning - I got a good deal actually, something the shop had just brought out today. Took about half an hour or so to compare 3 different places and in the end bought from Game as their deal was more suited to my needs and cheaper. Managed to get the Wii, 2 controllers, 2 nunchucks, 2 steering wheels, Wii Play, MarioKart and 3 (I think) other games and a charger for the controller. I can't remember what the other games are because I've stashed the Wii at my mums! I also went a bit mad and bought two Singstar mics for our PS2 along with two of the games that go with them for £15 each. I'm seriously skint now, but I think in terms of a console that is excellent for family participation, I've got the right one. We still have the PS2 if OH or the children want to play other games - I'm quite strict about the amount of time they spend on the console anyway, so I think the Wii will give us all some fun playing, but as a family (well, that's the idea anyway!!).
I think the family are going to be really chuffed and the kids in particular will just love it.
Thanks again for all your help, I wouldn't have been able to decide without it
Susan
