So confused re games consoles

Firstly, I hope this is the right place to post this, i apologise if it isn't .

I am so confused about whether to get an xbox 360 or a Wii. I think the family would like a Wii more to be honest, but it's so expensive! Do you need more than 2 remotes and/or the nunchuck thingys (and what the heck are they anyway?) to play the games or would two be enough (we are a family of 4).I am really reluctant to pay out for the Wii, only to find I need to buy several other things to get started.

Oh, and another thing I wondered - how does it connect to your TV? Do you need one of those TVs with the connections at the front?

Can you tell I'm clueless lol?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Susan :-)

If its a family console you want a wii would be better, most of the games are built around interaction with others nearby

It doesn't have the best graphics but what it does have is the FUN factor and I mean FUN

If it was a one person type console mainly I go for xbox or ps3

    TV connects via component

  • Thanks for that information - really helpful :-) And as for the TV connection - also great, now I know what I need to look for.

Half the problem I'm having is that this console will be a surprise for the family - even my oh doesn't know what I'm planning, so I have to try and figure out all the connection stuff on my own! - things like, can you have two games consoles plugged into your TV at the same time (oh has a PS2). It's all very confusing lol.

Your information is really appreciated, thanks.

Would I need more than two controllers, do you think?

  • For the number of controllers, it depends on the game.

Most of the packaged Wii Sports games will work on one/two controller for four players. Some of the games need four controllers. If you want a family/party console it is definitely the option.

It depends on tv but you should have no problems obviously can only use one tv at any one time

The wii isn't high definition that has to be 720p to 1080P, this is 480p but it is not bad quality, games graphics are more simplistic but incredible they make them game fun. Its the controllers were the wii score the most.

You will need a spare bluetooth remote and nunchuck for 2 gaming experince though

Remote 208-5683594SPA67UC338822T.jpg one comes with wii

    Nunchuck 208-5683604SPA67UC338349T.jpg

This game (wiiplay) you get a remote and mini games a nunchuck is around £12

If you play it alot which you will you need either a charging station they come with rechargeable batteries. I got this one

Or make sure you have some rechargeable (AA) I think

The Wii is the family/party console without a doubt.
We have two controllers and nunchucks.

This means that two people can play and another can watch, and if you get the right games this can be as much fun.

We had my neighbours son - 6 yo - playing against my MIL - 78 yo and watching it was hilarious.

    ...however...be warned...

my two lads (10 and 7) saved all their birthday money and clubbed together to buy a wii between them (we'd already got 2x ps2, a ps3 and an xbox 360 in the house)..

the wii has a certain novelty value, but that is short-lived. of all the consoles it's the least-used by far (hardly been on at all for the last couple of months) and the least reliable (had to get a replacement after 6 months, the disk mechanism went). Due to the awful controls, any "serious" games are not very playable. If you're going to get one, get extended and accidental cover for it (gamestation do an extra 2 yrs plus accidental damage covering the console itself and the controllers) for £30. Well worth it considering how easy it can be to let a controller fly into a wall/bang on furniture/etc...

Just my opinion and experience..everyone's wil be different...

Thanks Antispam and 5bellies for the information, seems like two controllers and nunchucks at least then.

It certainly does sound like a lot of fun and I would have loved to see your MIL and the wee lad mymatebob, sounds hysterical!

My kids are the same ages as yours GunJack and i think they would love it - but I have thought about whether the novelty would wear off quickly and they would want to go back to their games on the PS2. I certainly don't plan to get every 'new' wii thing that comes onto the market, so perhaps it's more something they would play when their friends come round, don't know... I will definitely consider an extended warranty too, that's something I wouuld have got if I had gone for the Xbox.

Thanks for all your help everyone, it's been invaluable and much appreciated.:D
Now to trawl through the options online ...

  • Deffo the Wii for family interaction purposes, we(sic) are a family of 4.

Serious gaming will be found in other consoles.

Ours gets well-used, even after 18 months.

I think most modern families need both consoles for different reasons.

"need"? I belong to a modern family and haven't got any game consoles.

Interesting that you have had reliability issues as this is not something I have heard being a problem before.

As for extra insurance I wouldn't bother, personally.
Put the strap on the controller and it is almost impossible for it to "fly" anywhere.
