running power into the loft

I suggest you read all of it and not the part that has be posted, it has been mis-quoted and is not taken from the Part P Document.
"There are certain exceptions to the above and outlined below are the types of electrical works which may be carried out by someone other than a competent person" this statement is not in the Part P Reg document and the rest of quoted statement refers to items of work that do not need notification to the Building Control bodies.

Thanks all. Will do some more reading.
Looks like it will be easier to just get a sparky to do it. Was just trying to save a bit of money. I wouldn't have done anything without checking first, so thanks for the pointers.0 -
If it helps, in my loft, I just have a light plugged into a mains extension that I chuck down and plug in whenever I'm up there. Easiest (and probably cheapest) solution if you're a casual loft user0

A little information in the wrong hands is dangerous!!!!
If you had to google it then you no nothing about the subject.
Some of us do it for a living .....DO NOT ADVISE IF YOU DO NO KNOW!!!!
Well if you do it for a living then you knew what you said wasn't true. Why tell porkies? Is it any wonder people do not trust tradesmen?
I used Google it to find something to use as a reference to something I knew was a fact as otherwise I'd be just another poster posting unsubstantiated rubbish.
I never stated it was from Part P (nor did anyone else as far as I can tell), and its not mis-quoted either. I presumed as we were discussing what could and couldn't be done by a DIYer it would suffice to show the relevant section to the dicussion.
I also posted thislatecomer wrote:To the OP, sounds like you dont have any idea about electrics given you were considering tapping into the lighting circuit. Perhaps it might best get in a pro.0 -

That's what I'm doing at the moment, but I'm hoping to board up the whole loft soon and require a couple of light fittings to help with this, and also to help as and when I'm lugging stuff up and down.0 -
Read the Part P document for yourself here. The above was not mis-quoted. See page 8.
Not what a DIYer is allowed to do, try reading all of the document first not just bits,
as for telling "porkies" latecomer try reading more than the first line !0 -
You are only allowed to change lighting and power accessories like for like or different manufacturer and replace damaged cables. you are not allow to add to lighting or power circuits.
So I suggest you get an sparky to do the work.

Electricity Kills - so get it done right!!!
Sorry madjay I must be going blind. Please highlight in the above text where you said that it is permissible for DIYers to add a spur off the ring main or an additional light fitting off the existing lighting circuit.0 -

you are NOT allowed to add a Spur or an additional light fitting off existing lighting circuit.
all you have done is googled a page, read the first line and now think you know it all when it is clear you have no qualifications in this area and know jack about the subject.0 -

I must say I thought it WAS allowable to add an additional light fitting to an existing circuit, I thought it was a new lighting circuit that you weren't allowed to do. I shall have a thorough read of the docs....0
