Theres nothing majorly obvious in there so my next call is to try SPYWARE DOCTOR

Update and Scan
The other thing I would seriously consider is a RAM upgrade. 1 gig will run a lot better than 750 meg:idea:0 -
Make sure AVAST isnt scanning on bootup too:idea:0

It's only an incremental..........
I think I made an error in giving this thread the title that I did, it isn't specifically anything to do with the backup or iplayer for that matter.
Are you sure? Norton Ghost is a resource hog. If you're using high compression levels, it'll hammer the CPU.0 -
Update the graphics chip ~

Updated Flash. Graphics card already on this version.
Sygate Firewall replaced with PC Tools
I'll do the Spyware Doc scan next.
Avast had the Test Memory during application start-up box ticked, I unticked it. Is that correct?0 -
OK, so what have you installed or updated in that time?
I have been wracking my brains to answer that one ..........
Certainly no hardware.
Software? Service Pack 3. I don't think anything else.
One of the reasons I want to get the PC running well is that I have the latest version of MS Office to install. The OH works at Leicester Uni so got it for peanuts. She uses it at work and wants to use it at home as well. Just a bit concerned that it won't perform on this PC.0 -
When's the last time you defragged your HDD?
You might also consider upgrading your RAM.0
