PC, Poor performance when backing up

Over the last few weeks my PC has started to suffer from poor performance for example if I have BBC Iplayer radio playing and the daily backup (Norton Ghost) starts, the streaming radio is interrupted by a "burp" sound and the mouse pointer momentarily freezes. It's not just Ghost that affects it in this way, anything that hits the processor does it. It's just that the backup is a good way of reproducing the problem.

I have done the following.........

CCleaner
Spybot S&D
Malwarebytes Anti Malware
Avast full virus scan

All came back clean.

My system drive is only half full and has been de-fragged
I have checked that there aren't any unwanted start up progs.

Before I start tearing my hair out can anyone suggest what the problem may be?

Have you checked your connection speed, if it happens at other times, it's your connection, if not it's Norton Ghost hogging the computer - which would be fairly normal, especially if it's backing up a lot and set to work speedily.

Bring up the Task Manager when these problem programs are running to see how loaded the computer is and what is hogging the processor (right click the task bar and choose Task Manager, or Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring it up from there).

Connection speed is fine. Iplayer isn't stopping to buffer.

The CPU is running at 90 - 100% and yes, it's ghost that is hitting it at the moment as I have just started a test backup.............BUT.........

It didn't do this before.

Other things have the same effect, for example opening a new browser window will give a short "Burp" as Iplayer stutters.

It's only an incremental..........

I think I made an error in giving this thread the title that I did, it isn't specifically anything to do with the backup or iplayer for that matter. It's just an easy way to reproduce the lack of performance that the PC is suffering.

At the top it says the version number. Under that is the service pack. Can you give me the service pack and the info underneath please? (cpu, ram and graphics card)

Uninstall Sygate

Turn on windows firewall

Download PC tools firewall
