obscene text messages

This evening I started receiving obscene texts messages, I rang my provider - T Mobile who informed me that as they were not from a 'third party' nothing could be done, even though the person who texted didnt withold their number. I really don't want to change my number as it would cause such a lot of aggravation (but will as a last resort), does anyone have any ideas on how I can stop these texts please? I searched on the internet and the number is apparently an 'orange' one.

Thanks for any help given.

Report it to the police, it is a crime. The police can not only track down the account and get the provider to close it, but even if it is PAYG, the provider can track where the phone is being used, and all sorts of other interesting information.

Mobile phones give a trace and therefore the police can legally request access to all the numbers the person has called, where they were when they made the call. They can get information regarding the IMEI number of the phone in the UK, and have the phone barred.

And if the police can work out who it was that made the call, then it is a criminal offence.

In theory if the phone is left on the police could put a live trace on the phone, find the area where it is, get close enough to call the number and then apprehend the individual.

Of course they probably just won't be bothered.

Meanwhile ask to speak to a manager at t-mobile, they should deal with it, and complain to Ofcom if they won't.

Most people can't be bothered with the hassle it takes to get anything done, but if you persist you can normally get results.
  • why not post up the number here and we will all ring it and tell them to !!!!!! off....

No point. There's physically nothing they can do. T-Mobile do not bar anyone from calling/texting you, and they will not give you any incoming call/text details. All a manager will do is reiterate to you that they can change your phone number (free of charge), but a csa can tell you this as well.

All you can do is contact the police, who will get in touch with T-Mobile's Police Liaison Team to find out who is sending you the texts and take action.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.

every telco has to provide a nuisance call dept, who will monitor & request a police report is made, I on T-mobile years ago spoke to this dept & police within a few weeks two females were cautioned & I never recieved another
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • put the number into this site: http://mnnc.net/index_old.php

it'll give you a likely indication of the network the person is on.

then call their network, say you've been getting these texts, they'll probably block the persons phone in a flash.

  • Indeed, if it's been PACed the checker will be wrong. In that instance, you just call every network :)

Thank you all so much for your replies. I did ring T mobile again and they repeated there was nothing they could do, I also tracked the number down to an orange network and e mailed them, they came back with the reply that they also could do nothing! Luckily I have had no more than the 3 messages and none at all yesterday, so hopefully it's a silly 'youth' who has got bored..(although at the time is was very unnerving).

It is so reassuring to know that my provider is willing to take my monthly contract money but has no interest at all when there are problems, I have been with T mobile for over ten years now!

Legally they can't do anything. The frontline staff don't have access to any system that'll help you, they can't see your incoming texts for example so they have no way of confirming what your telling them (and people do call in and try to get info on other peoples numbers, which falls under the DPA).

That's why you have to report it to the police. They then contact the networks Police Liaison dept who can give them all the info they need to confirm what's happening and take action.
