Dogs can't digest tennis balls either, but it doesn't stop Barney trying to eat them.......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

I read recently that grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs and result in renal failure. After keeping dogs pretty much all my life I was surprised I had never heard if this before.
Though not often a problem as I have found all my dogs tend to not touch grapes they do however find raisins palatable.
Can anyone confirm if this is true?No sigs, I don't smoke....:rotfl:0 -
It is - there is one case I know about a couple of years ago where a dog managed to steal a bag of raisins meant for the christmas pudding I think - ate the lot! Soon as the owner came home the dog was rushed to the vets who said it was nothing to worry about- they would pass and dog would be fine etc etc. Within days the dogs system shut down and it passed away in great discomfort despite all the help offered by vets - it was just too late.
My friend who's a vet and I discussed it some years later and she confirmed they are poisonous - but the quantity required is still debated I believe.
In short will your dog die from ONE grape? Not likely
Any large quantities I would take the dog immediately to the vets...
Oh and my gannet will eat as many grapes as she can given half a chance... or bananas, apples, pears... you name it...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Jeez Im lucky,my lad has no problems with beef - but then he does only ever get a tablespoon at a time.
Veggies - well apparently dogs cant digest veggies as they are meat eaters. I think they can digest them otherwise my lad would be pooing whole heads of broccoli and cauliflower and spuds. He gets a sunday dinner with the rest of us - parsnips and yorkies as well and his poo is just fine - not a veg in sight
I understand that they dont actually get the vitamins and minerals from them - just the whole lot is passed through0 -
nor does it stop Stitch trying to devour every one we have bought him!:D
We have to buy solid rubber balls that weigh a tonne as tennis balls last about 3 flings with the ball thrower before it's so mangled you can't throw it any more

To the ball munchers out there - buy the best quality tennis balls you can afford - they are made of toughter stuff. We got some Dunlop Titanium ones at the end of last season, and they are still going strong.....
IIRC dogs can digest cooked vegetables, or puree/mushed ones, because then the cellulose cell wall has been mechanically broken which releases all the goodness, they can't digest raw or unbroken cellulose walls, which means they can't release the goodness.
Raisins, sultanas and grapes are all poisonous, but they haven't descovered why or how yet, some dogs can survive large qtys, others can't - not worth the risk of an residual poisoning either.
BTW - oinions are also a no no, as large amounts, or a build up from small amounts over a long period cause anemia. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Apparently the Dog Borstal episode was edited and the trainer actually said beef and pork were not as easy to digest as chicken and lamb. Here's what he actually said..... http://www.micmartin.co.uk/49901.html
