Dogs cant digest beef????

Just watching Dog Borstal on BBC3 where the trainer was telling off an owner for feeding her dogs Broccoli, Pork and Beef. His comment was "Dogs cant digest beef".

Now this is new on me, I know the usual chocolate and onions rule, but I have never heard of beef. My boys always have the bits from the beef joint.

Is this true?

Our two Maltese terriers eat pretty much anything, but beef seems to upset their stomachs.
Depends on the dogs I suppose, could also be down to the relative density of beef being harder for them to digest as they rarely chew meat...it's usually pretty much inhaled by the greedy little sods!
Our Japanese Chin eats anything. Nothing seems to bother his cast-iron constitution...

The trainer actually told the woman she had shortened her dogs lives by feeding them this. Im amazed if thats true, especially given that 90% of dog food seems to be beef orientated.

Mine dont have pork, that seems to upset their stomachs as well though.

We used to think that about pork, though all three of ours seem to be able to eat it OK. Even bacon!
But chocolate is definitely out, they don't even like the taste, thankfully. Cheese, however....!!!

If your talking about tinned dog food then that is mainly processed and made safe for dogs to eat. You may find that tinned dog food is mainly made up from Horse meat and the left over rubbish from farm animals.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i watched a show on TV once about what tinned dog food really is,

Most dogs from what I understand have a problem/sensitivity to beef..... it seemed to affect my previous dogs coat & immunity to things like skin conditions - almost like an allergy. I'm sorry I cant remember where I heard it cos it was years ago . I changed my dogs diet at the time to chicken based & it certainly helped her..... I guess its a bit like our systems ... our systems dont like to much beef & they recomend maybe just once or twice a week.....

Most dog foods from the high end of the ranges rarely contain beef... they contain chicken, lamb, turkey etc - rarely do they involve beef :)
I know Kira has the occasional scrap of beef when we have steaks but she usually has it raw and not cooked... I wonder if that makes a difference?

  • No, Stay away from feeding them Beef.

    A - It can be expensive.Lol

B- Not ideal for a dog/s to digest, They can also choke VERY easily.

I feed my Boxer & Hound on bread, Some meats & the dried Dog biscuits.

The Boxer is a '!!!!!!' for food, She follows you round the kitchen, Then when you open the fridge - They both put their paws on the fridge.Lol

They sometimes 'Run Off' with food from the table/worktops.

At xmas they 'Run Off' with mince pies.Lol

my Westie can hear a tin of corned beef being opened from one end of the house to the other - I don't give him much but he would quite happy eat tin after tin

Cheese is another favourite along with raw carrots, raw brocolli and raw turnip

He also loves pasta with butter (and cheese)

I've heard that they shouldn't have too much bread - which he doesn't
