  • I had a bottle of sparkling rose from M&S on crimbo day that was dangerously drinkable and on special offer before christmas! It was an Italian Prosecco but not 100% sure of the exact name.

and, appropriately enough, there's now a Welsh fizz, in the form of sparkling Welsh wine made from 100% Seyval Blanc grapes, by Glyndwr Wines. "Racy bubbles with good crisp finish", the critics say. I just say, it's lovely, cheers!

It's so nice that we had it as our wedding fizz.

They have a website here: http://www.glyndwrvineyard.co.uk/ . I've bought from them direct and they were immensely helpful. They'll probably be at most of the wine festivals and the food festivals in Wales and London.

    Hope this helps

Tesco Wine Club have champagne on offer this week for £12 per bottle. You have to buy a case of 6 though. I am still waiting for the top marque champagnes at £10 to £12 the newspapers were trumpeting earlier. They said it would be in the shops for Christmas !! Sorry all you Cava and sparkling wine fans, only a very few Oz & NZ ones compare for taste. Most of it is cheap and nasty sparkling wine. Ugh !! Here's a tip if you get some as a prezzy. Pep up even the most tasteless stuff with a splash of Creme de Cassis. It is a very pleasant tasting liquer which turns the bubbly pink. It is the stuff they use to make Kir and Kir Royale. The 'Royale' means that real champers has been used.

  • Majestic Wine Warehouse is difficult to beat, especially if you pop over to the branches in France. Current prices over there from 10.99 GBP. (Over here from 13.99 GBP)

The best deals of all are if you go to the growing region of Champagne and buy direct from the producer. But since the fall in the pound v. the euro, the attraction of the booze cruise to Calais or Boulogne has lost its appeal. When the supermarkets here have 25% or more off, that is the time to buy. Waitrose are doing it this week.

Everyone is cheaper in France, Sainsburys and Tescos have branches in Calais as well, but the real booze cruise bargain times are long gone due to the rate of exchange for the £ against the Euro. However to update Martin's Thread, this week Tesco have the following offer on Champagne:-

    De Vallois £ 13.30
    Pol Aime £ 13.75
Tesco Blanc de Noir £ 13.28
    Leo Deviroy Brut £ 12.00
    Francis Dubois £ 13.77

All prices per bottle, but you have to buy in cases of 6 to get this price. None of these are Grand Marque names, and if I had to choose it would be the Tesco Blanc de Noir. At least it is not sparkling wine pretending to be champagne !!
