Supermarket champagne (and that includes dross like Moet) is almost invariably rubbish. Not worth it at the discounted price!

Hi I am not sure if it is the finest range, but it is definately vintage. Not sure when it ends either but it was on at weekend also. Was told by the sales assistant that the offer had been extended.
  • is that for al lTesco's, or are they cutting the Express stores out of it, as seems to be their usual ploy..

  • Most of the supermarket champagne deals are a bit of a con because they vastly inflate the original price. It's really just cheap champagne and isn't good value.

For the same money you are often better off going for a good quality bottle of wine than cheap champagne.

You won't find the best champagnes sold in supermarkets because the best champagne houses don't allow them to sell it. Instead you have to go to a wine merchant to find the genuine deals for the best stuff.

For a good rose champagne I go for this at £22.25 per bottle:

I like rose champaigns which are usually more expensive than standard ones but I do have a favourite cheap alternative which is called "Pink"

Its really drinkable in that nice but slightly dangerous way :p . It usually costs £7.99 and I've seen it in Asda, Spar and Sainsburys (not sure about Tesco and Morrisons). However its often on special offer from time to time so its not unusual to find it for around £5. I always stock up when its on offer.

Marques de Monisrol Rose Brut Cava. Last time I looked was on offer in Morrisons for just over a fiver - very pleasant and yes very drinkable in a dangerous way abv said 12% but sure it was more, extra fermentation in the bottle I recon.
  • I can't understand the snobbery over Cava, I find a good cava much better than a cheap champagne. Its made by exactly the same method.

Besides why support french industries - After all what do they do for us (Gallic shrug)

  • True that Champagne can only be from that eponymous region of France, and it's illegal within the EU for wine produced anywhere else to be so-called, but of course Australia is not in the EU, and has until recently been using the term freely to refer to their own wines produced by the "methode champenoise". They've recently signed an agreement to stop doing so, but it's perfectly possible that your friend could have a bottle that is labelled "Australian Champagne".

I'm not sure what they'll start calling it instead. They need to think of a name that does the same job as "cava" or "prosecco" that means "Alright, we're not allowed to call it champagne, but this is the same thing except that it comes from (Spain/Italy/Australia - delete as appropriate)."

Unfortunately for them, if they were producing a version to sell it to us Brits there's another name that's already taken - Pomagne!
