I am 2/3 of the way through the book and it makes so much sense! there is little 'scare-mongering' or 'guilt' trips, he tells you like it is and uses repetition of sentences/phrases throughout the book to reaffirm the messages of how to give up successfully - you are even told to continue smoking whilst reading the book ! If that's not an incentive to any smoker i don't know what is! So you can smoke whilst getting the best advice with how to stop and STAY stopped AND without cravings! it's brilliant! - Steve0

I have to agree re Allen Carrs Easy Way to stop smoking - My friend read it and just stopped after 30 years smoking- said it was easy so I read the book 2 years ago and just stopped after 26 years of smoking- and it was easy! Just like it said on the tin. He almost hypnotises you - the book is repetitve but makes you think differently. Now I look at people who smoke and want to tell them that its all in the mind that its difficult to give up but in reality it is not such an ordeal. Please read the book - it will save you a fortune and make you live longer and make you smell better too!! FONT]0

Keep going all you ex smokers, you're beginning to make me think about joining you
. I'm starting to gather tips from nursing colleagues and thought I'd share them with you.
1. If hunger pangs hit, sucking a glucose sweetie could help
2. Your risk of heart and stroke problems increases with age if you smoke. You knew that didn't you, but what you need to remember is that if you have a stroke you might be twisted up and unable to move easily or speak coherently and that might last for years until you finally kick the bucket. Don't expect nhs stroke services to be as good as they need to be - they won't be, especially if you're over 60.
3. If number 2 happens you also might not be able to light a fag anyway!
4. If you're absolutely gasping for a fag - lick an ashtray to remind you of what's inside your lungs.
5. Make sure you stay as busy as you can manage, even if it means choosing between having a fag and jogging round the streets for half an hour - that should put you off both.
6. Reward yourself every day for not smoking - after all you've got about a fiver to spend on treats which would have gone up in smoke.
7. If the craving becomes impossible to bear, burn a five pound note to remind you of the financial benefits
8. Your tip here.........
Good luck, I'll be reading :A0 -
Hi
I posted this message below on 09-10-2005 but the info is still relevant just the money I have saved is wrong as it is more now :j -:
One year, 8 hours, 3 minutes and 5 seconds. 7306 cigarettes not smoked, saving £3,653.35. Life saved: 3 weeks, 4 days, 8 hours, 50 minutes.
The wife and I stopped last year and I can honestly say it was the best thing we ever done, if you have just stopped trust me it does get easier and the benefits (as seen above) FAR outweigh any negatives.
You can download the nifty stop smoking meter HERE I rarely use it now but its always there to show how much money we have saved and are STILL saving
Good luck to you all
Heres to next year and another £3,653.35 !!Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.0 -
ok....am reeley struggling at the moment, its been 3 weeks today i think and i presumed it would be dead easy by now. however going to the pub is a nightmare. also there is a certain tradition around military establishments, with fag breaks and the order " fag beak... those that dont smoke... go through the motions". so i am now in the minority and it seems like everybody else smokes. On the brightside, the missis has promised me a trumpet and book on how to play it off ebay if i stop smoking long enough to get enough puff to play itsaving for more holidays0

One week, 22 hours, 6 minutes and 10 seconds.
102 cigarettes not smoked,
saving £27.29.
Life saved: 8 hours, 30 minutes.
WOW! Thank you so much for that info MICHAEL19. I think thats really going to help! I cant believe that ive not smoked over 100 cigarettes! In just 8 days. God i never thought of it like that!
LUCYSPOON: I have read alan carrs easy way book before and did stop for 3 days. 3 Days has always been my "cant get past" point. I do admit that many, many of his points are true, relevant and helpful but for me the book didnt work. I hate the way he speaks about NRT. But then of course he is because he is offering an alternative way. In my mind im bearing in mind the psycology i read in his book but combining them with the science of nrt (patches). Well done for staying stopped for so long! Cant wait until im in the same situation.
FLYBYNIGHT: argh, dont say that. Im hoping its easier by 2 weeks!! Perhaps its good that i know it wont be and that i can stop being nieve and unprepared when the time comes!! Stick with it sweety. My fiance said last night that for me the last week has been hell. If i give in and have one now i would have to do the last 7 days all over again. And what would be the point in that? Dont know if that helps you but it seems to have helped me today... and todays been a toughy!! Stick with it!0 -
Hi to all of you who have STOPPED SMOKING for however many days/weeks. Think about it - saying you are "giving up" is saying that it is a process that goes on and on and that you haven't succeeded yet, whereas saying you STOPPED SMOKING is a positive statement. When you think about itl, saying giving it up implies it is a pleasure, but in reality it is anti-social, smelly, and a killer! I could have bought a bungalow for cash with the cash I have spent on ciggies!!!
Two tips - when offered a cigarette in a pub etc., say "I DON'T SMOKE", this usually closes the subject and you can feel proud. If you say you're "giving up", then people will either try and tempt you into"just one won't hurt you", or you will talk about it for a long time and think about it, miss it and feel tempted. one other thing that helped me in the past was buying a Crafe Away imitation ciggy at the chemist. Carry it in your pocket and when you want something to do with your hands, you can twiddle with it in your pocket, or if you really need to put something in your mouth, you can chew on it. Most of all, keeping busy, e.g. housework or a hobby stops you thinking about it.
I am psyching myself up to STOPPING. permanently. l
LAST TIME i USED STRESS AS AN EXCUSE, THIS TIME THERE WILL BE NO EXCUSE. Well done to all of youC'est la vie!0 -
