Ginger Cake in BM
150ml milk
1 egg
3tbsp veg oil
2tbsp golden syrup
2tbsp dark treacle
100gm dark brown sugar
pinch salt
1tsp vanilla extract
2.5tsp ground ginger
225gm plain flour
1.5tsp baking powder
1tsp baking soda
1-Add milk to tin. Lightly beat egg and add to the milk in tin.
2-Add the oil, syrup, treacle, brown sugar, salt, vanilla and ginger.
3-Add flour on top of wet ingredients.
4-Sprinkle baking powder and soda on top of flour.
5-Place tin into BM and set programme to "cake" or "quick".
6-Of applicable set crust colour to light, oither models do not require a crust setting.
7-Press start.
8-After 10 mins check that there is no flour left unmixed at the edges. If there is scrape it into themix with a spatula.
9-When programme has finished carefully remove tin from machine. Run a plastic spatula around the loaf. Turn out onto wire rack and cool for 20-30 mins before slicing.WW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0 -
I have been reading through the posts on cutting down on the shopping bill etc and have noticed that many of you make your own bread in a BM, I don't have one, but I am thinking of buying one, if it stops me going the supermarket for a loaf of bread and coming out with £10 worth of things I didn't need!! I just wondered what the actual cost of making your own bread is? (per loaf if poss)

I have one and have never regretted buying it. Not sure what the cost is of making your own but i feel its worth it as you know whats in it and my kids love it - the loaf never lasts long!!!!!!!!!!0

The short answer is from 30-40p using strong flour and dried yeast and depending on how much you add in the way of nuts or fruits for the specials and, once you get the hang of it - the tips on using ordinary value plain flour and free live yeast can reduce this to around just ten pence.

Just a quick word on yeast. Tesco will give you a whole load of fresh yeast for nothing. Just ask at the in-store bakery. Last time I got so much I had to freeze most of it! I've found I get much better results than with the dried stuff as well. I should add that I don't have a bread-making machine, but do it all by hand - you can be much more versatile that way, and don't get that silly hole in the bottom
PS. When using fresh yeast you need to use twice the amount as you would with the dried.0_o0 -
True, but most breadmakers stipulate dried yeast and so it's really a good idea to get to know how your machine works in a standard way using the instruction book recipes before you start experimenting with the various alternative ways that you can find mentioned here.

Thanks nick that 's a really useful tip about fresh yeast,I'm going to ask at my local Tesco.
I make nearly all my own bread(hence my new avatar), without a breadmaker too.The hole used to bug me when I had one(now given away).You're absolutely right about it being more versatile.I find it quicker to hand bake,the breadmaker would make one loaf in 4 hours,I can make three loaves at once in 3 hours 20 mins.Of course BMs are very useful if you're out of the house all day.0 -

By the way, if you're getting into handmade bread, I can heartily recommend a book called (funnily enough) The Handmade Loaf. It's totally changed the way I bake bread, although you may not be keen on the leaven loaf that takes over 8 hours to make! Well, it's on offer at Amazon at the mo. Linky ---> Here0_o0 -
