Is it something like 269g ????
    erm...

    9.5 oz X 28 = 266g

Did you zero the scales with the EMPTY cup on? Anyway - it's reasonably close to a standard cup.

Thanks Allexie. Your running commentary on breadmaking made me smile! :D

I have succumbed and bought a MR Fastbake (stainless steel one) in the sale at Argos (£40 but used Nectar vouchers to bring it down to £35). Haven't used it yet, as I'm waiting to save my PIN money before I let myself! Self discipline!

I read through the manual and found it sounded a bit more complicated than I expected as well. Glad it's not just me.:o

Buy yourself the VITAL Breadmix .. from LIDL ... makes 2 breads ...
    ALL is in ...
    Works every time ...
costs 89 pence per Kg (hence 2 breads!)

&…is even VERY healthy .. (looking @ the ingredients )

People will believe 'YOU are in the KNOW' ... / tastes and looks so GOOD
(or the mother/father of 'Jamie'..or some other fine dining geek ...)

    Good luck ...

(P.S:this is our 15 year home breadmaker experience .. )

Open recipes work ... sometimes ...

The LIDL one ... is for the 'journal of reproducible results'

Right...I had an expedition to some far-flung part of town yesterday to visit Lidl, (blimey, it was like going abroad...nobody spoke English...not even the staff!)

I got 2 packets of the Vital Bread Mix - Multi-Grain Mix and Sunflower Seed Mix. Tried the Multi-Grain one last night. (I did it on the 'Wholewheat/Large setting - 4.5 hrs in the MR)

Ermm...well, the bread has turned out quite 'dense' at the bottom half of the loaf and it has a thin white sort of crusty layer on the top. Also, judging by what stuck to the sides of the pan it looks as if it rose and then shrunk back a bit. (I didn't open the lid, honest!) Is this usual or have I done something wrong? It tastes good though...very filling!

I think my first loaf using the Hovis Strong Brown Bread Flour and the 'Brown Bread' recipe from the MR book was the nicer of the two, but the Lidl/Vital one was much easier. The only thing with the Hovis recipe was I found it too sweet and I was wondering if I reduced the amount of sugar - 2.5tbsp for a small loaf (!) would it affect the yeast/rising/thingummy-do?

  • I too feel that the bread in the basic loaves come out too sweet and have experimented with reducing the sugar and have found that in the 2lb loaf i can reduce it by half with no problems and the loaf is much less sweet.

Interestingly I have bought some sunflower bread flour and the receipe on the pack does not require any sugar and this rises without any problem and the loaf is lovely.

    Another cry for help!

Has anyone made the Peanut Butter Bread from the MR recipe book? It is supposed to be a large loaf but it sez to cook it on setting no 1 but that is supposed to be for a basic small loaf. Is this right? Is it a misprint? Is the PB Bread any good?

Too late anyhoos as tis chugging away.... :D
