  • Wow, £800 would be luxury to us! We have about £200 left from OH wages and about £200 tax credits once all direct debits are taken care of... We don't really struggle though.

  • When I was pg with DD I lost my job and had to live off £43.25pw for 6 months... When I got maternity pay of £107pw I thought I'd hit the jackpot... You always live to your means...

If you find yourself struggling why not work out a spreadsheet of all bills and how much it works out to per week then put this money aside from each pay so it evens out over the month... Another thing I do is have £10 a week transferred into a savings account. It's only a small amount so I don't notice it, but it really builds up after a while...

Everything we spend is generally budgeted for. Bills, standard spends, xmas, car maintenance, fuel etc... A bit of the extra is always saved and the rest goes on what we fancy. If everything is budgeted for that you know you have to spend the rest you can split throughout the month to buy stuff you'd like.

Food comes in under bills for me and we have a pretty strict budget. I have a list of cheap meals, medium ones and treats that we like. I'm always looking out for good deals on any of the above categoriesand if I find any they go straight in the freezer generally.

Is the £800 you're left with, before or after mortgage/rent payments, as that's not on your list?

I find it so much easier to budget when being paid weekly, I remembera few years ago when OH used to get paid monthly, it was a pain in the backside and we were always getting into difficulties.

I have asked before how much do people manage on after bills and I think the answer that I got is how long is a piece of string!
Do you put money away for car servicing, etc. I bank with the Halifax and have lots of little savings accounts adn put money away every month for clothes, christmas, bills inc car servicing, house maintenance and a car fund - Go through last years bills and put that amount away plus a bit . We have £900 for 4 of us after bills. I find that it isn't enough and I am sure that some people will say - what!!! The age of children also comes into it - my 15 year old can be quite expensive.

We're usually left with £660 a month to spend on food and petrol and any extras, and I manage quite well on this, theres enough to go out with and pay DD nusery. But now OH has new job, this month should see us with up to £910 left. So will be nice for christmas with some extra money not counted for!
I agree you manage with what you've got. And its defintly easier to write it all down, I also only draw out a certain amount cash each week, so I know this is what I have and thats it. I dont use a debit card as I think its easier to lose track of how much is actually going out! I much prefer cash!
BTW theres 2 adults one 4yr old in our house!

i am left with about 800 a month after all my direct debits have been paid, to fund day-to-day living i.e. food, travel, credit card, haircut, clothes, holidays, presents, dentist, going out, cycle repairs, cat food/litter etc, misc expenses - i rarely manage to save anything and I am not frivolous with money.
  • After household bills inc mortgage. I would say around £2150 left over.

This then covers food, birthdays, Christmas, petrol, mot , car insurance & maint, holidays etc.

I am SAHM. We are 2 adults and 1 dd.
