I am under 65 and this is the answer I received from NHS pensions " I confirm that you tax code was uprated from 34L to 94L with effect from the pension payment due on 3 October 2008 however HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) instructed us to apply these codes on a month one basis. This means that no previous pay and tax is taken into account when the code is applied to your pension and therefore no refund of £60.00 was payable. The tax office said my coding had to be operated on a non cumulative basis. A full check of my tax position will be made after 6th April next. Does this make sense? Thanks

If your previous code, 34L, was being operated on a non-cumulative (month 1) basis, then it's correct for your pension provider to uprated it and kept it non-cumulative.

It does make sense and has probably happened because your tax code has had to be adjusted during the tax year.

This happened to me last year when HMRC changed my tax code to take into account Personal pension payments. I phoned them and said that I didn't want this taken into account on my tax code but preferred to sort it out with my SA return. They changed it back to the normal tax code but as one pay had already gobe through with the new code they applied the change on a non-cumulative basis for the rest of the tax year.

As they have said it will be reviewed at the end of the tax year.
