Should I be getting £120 rebate in income tax?

I earn between £14,625 to £15,000 gross and my payslip says a tax code of BR. I'm paid weekly as I'm a temp and my payslip each week shows the exact same amount of tax each week.

Should I be receiving the tax rebate based on the changes to personal allowance as outlined here?

if you have only one income then your tax code should be 603L and not BR.

when did you start your current emplyment?

did you give them a P45 or did you fill a P46 when you started?

I take it you have a second source of income such as a state pension or something which means you are on a BR?

You should get £10 more in your pay from October to March being £60 of the total £120 you mention.

As you're on basic rate your salary is not taxed on a cumulative basis and therefore you will not claw back the initial £60 as a refund like normal coded people have done.

If you fill in a tax return then you will get the £60 back via that, otherwise you will need to wait until 5 April and then write to the revenue to claim it back. If you do neither I assume you will get a refund eventually when they get round to looking at you case but that could take many months.

I started work in Feb 26th 08 and its my first job. My agency got me to fill in a P46 the same day I started work. Does this mean I should be on a lower tax?

Well this is my only full time job but I do pay national insurance at 7% .

I haven't got £60, £10 or anything in my payslips at all..
  • You're getting no tax free allowance (£6035 per year) and are paying 20% tax on everything you earn ;)

You are overpaying tax and need to get your tax code corrected asap

If you have already filled in a P46 phone HMRC and ask why you are still on code BR.

Ok i just called homeland revenue and customs !

That has a nice ring to it. ;) Although I'm not sure Her Majesty will be too pleased (it's HMRC as in ' Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs') at you being so familiar.

However at least they've given you the correct info. Suspect the initial P46 was incorrect .. and it's that which has created the problem.
