Generally it is safe to pay by cheque, but there are some unscrupulous sellers that take advantage of the 6 day guaranteed clearing, then goods never arrive. The buyer reports it to eBay who simply reply with "cheques aren't safe, you are not covered unless you pay with paypal".
The majority of buyers put it down to experience, rarely use eBay again, and those that do chase it up via official means (small claims court etc) generally find out they are chasing someone who has long since moved on.
I certainly don't object to recieving cheques, besides having to get them to the bank, but I don't encourage it from my customers.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0
