ebay without PayPal?!

Hi all,

need some advice please... I have done about 50 tranactions on eBay and have initially not used PayPal, but at some point last years started to do so. I always preferred to be paid on collection or by cheque - even if it takes longer.

Suddenly in Nov I am no longer able to sell anything without providing PayPal as an option; the page says that there is insufficient transaction history on my account for it not to include PayPal! Nothing has changed in the frequency or amount of things I have sold/bought.

Is there any way I can sell without using PayPal, which I loathe using? If this is not possible, I will have to revert to Gumtree or other sites.

Thanks

Don't blame you for hating Paypal. The problem is that ebay is the main place people will look. You could try Amazon but I found their fees quite high, although I have never had any issues with customers like with ebay.

Just start your items at a higher price to help offset the paypal costs. Buyers are getting used to increasing prices on ebay anyway.

Either that, or stick to selling cars, boats and real estate - the only categories where you don't need to offer paypal!!!

  • so you saying this is permanent and no way to go without the PayPal?! Does it mean everyone is now using PayPal to sell on eBay?

Sellers have to offer paypal, only exceptions are the categories mentioned by stevew8975.
  • You have no choice but to offer PayPal as a method of payment.
But you have a choice as to whether you use it. You can still allow other methods and, I suppose, request that any purchaser uses the alternative.

You can ask the buyer to pay with an alternative, but expect to be reported for this and your listings pulled. You have to accept paypal, nothing can be done to get round this

eBay seems to be making life as hard as possible for the small seller. I haev had nothing but hassle for the past few months.

I genuinely think it will be their downfall - they have alienated the people who made it great. Soon you will only be able to buy identikit versions of everything at the same buy-it-now price, give or take a penny.

What everyone liked about ebay is now dying! I felt I could get some real bargains on there, but most stuff is now higher than If you buy in Tesco or Amazon for example

  • I did say
"You have no choice but to offer PayPal as a method of payment."
    i.e. you must accept it.

But you can also allow other methods of payment and if the buyer decides to pay via the alternative method then PayPal is not involved in the transaction.

PayPal is NOT the ONLY method of payment allowed.

There are talks of banning cheques as well, but you can still ask for cheques and postal orders for the time being.
