Rottweiler and kids?

tiamai I could well believe you about poodles and whilst try - honest I do! - I shudder at the thought of a poodle setting paw in my house... I don't care what size it is if ever there was a dog with an inbred mental problem it's the poodle
but I know that is probably more than likely just MY view of them and not the reality...I just don't like them. On the other hand I don't think they belong on the dangerous dog register either...
Like other people have the right not to like dobies and rotties - I reserve the right to down right loathe poodles. But I'd never wish harm on oneDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -

I really really try not to hate them, but it's hard! I would not start spouting crap just because I don't like the breed though, I also hate egg mayonaise but I wouldn't call someone a chav for having an eggy samich.
I worked in a pet shop a couple years ago and the only dog I refused to go near was a miniature poodle and it was a nice little dog too, I just shudder when I see them. I blame the owners, those two that got me when I was a child were allowed to behave that way and never told any different. THAT is the difference.
I'm pretty sure there are more horse related injuries, deaths and accidents in the UK than dog incidents too. Just perspective.0 -
Rottweilers are the number 2 breed in terms of fatal attacks on humans. Topping the list of deaths by dog in a twenty year period is the Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix at 66 human deaths. The Rottweiler and Rottweiler mix was responsible for 39 human deaths.
Kind of says it all. In the Netherlands, for example, they are classed as dangerous dogs, and they are banned in some countries.
Stormgirl, why don't you go and and get a vocabulary instead of another Rottweiler, then you wouldn't have to post in capitals and swear on a public forum to express yourself.
Council estates are awash with the breed. I live on one and the number of them in the area has to be seen to be believed.
Again, I say, there are sensible animals to be had as a family pet, that are more controllable and less risky when out of control. The Rottweiler has a greater bite strength than the American Pit Bull Terrier, and those animals indeed fall under the Dangerous Dogs Act. In my opinion it is a pity that Rottweilers currently do not. I know that the Kennel Club takes a policy of Deed not Breed, however as a special interest group rather than a public interest group, they would.
Only in January this year a child died due to a Rottweiler attack. In the same month, an elderly man was savaged by his Rottweiler, and died. That's not counting the people who have been scarred for life or seriously injured by these animals. In 2007 there were similar incidents. That's just in this country alone.
You all appear to have short memories?
I applaud Dublin City Council's initiative, although their selection criteria for dogs seems a little random for some of the breeds listed. I hope it makes its way to England. It's a good First Step.
(It may well be true, that the worst dog in the world will behave with the absolutely right owner, but let's face it, there are few of those top class owners around in comparison to the number of Rottweilers, although doubtless everyone in the world who owns one thinks that they are one of the top, good responsible owners. Until their dog kills or injures someone, of course).
QED.

I don't much like Westies myself....I haven't personally met many very nice ones....but I'm not demanding that other people don't have them.
In my lifetime of having animals I have to agree with Mrs Tine that all my animal related injuries and scars are due to horses.....could be that I'm a rubbish handler and rider or that they are much bigger, more unpredicable and less controllable than dogs even big powerful ones like Rotts, GSDs or "pit bull" types?
I've only ever been bitten badly once....the GSD that did that, completely out of the blue was shortly afterwards was diagnosed as having a very painful spinal condition and in hindsight I probably hurt his back as I put his lead on......poor dog, it wasn't actually his fault.
Rather than blame any breed of dog, remembering that they are an animal who isn't capable of rational thought, reasoning or have any understanding of consequences, my view has always been that their owners SHOULD take responsibility for their animals , their behaviour and that the so called intelligent human should also take the blame for an animals misdoing. The fact that a lot of people don't isn't any dogs fault, they are only what their owner makes them.
IMHO there isn't any breed of dog that is dangerous just by virtue of breed....however there are too many people who have dogs that are untrained, ill mannered and TBH I wouldn't want those dogs around me either but I blame the owners ( and breeders if they are using dogs that aren't good in both health and temperament) not the dog for not knowing any better.
I have a rott, I've also been involved in rott rescue. I know how much blood sweat and tears go into making sure my dogs are pleasant to be around both at home and in public. I've dealt with the untrained, frankly unpleasant young dogs that are handed into rescue when they are ill mannered thugs at 40kgs+ but within a couple of weeks of clear consistant handling are big cuddly lapdogs that would die for their owners. I've also had to deal with terrified dogs that have had beatings to "harden them up" by people who are what I would class as chavs in the loosest sense. Without exception those dogs have regained their trust in most people despite their suffering after a lot of hard work. That is dangerous breed?
My own dog will put himself between me or mine if he thinks someone or something is a threat...NOT attack but will protect....what's wrong with that?As he is trained I know I can control him at all times, he has never even curled his lip at a person but complete and utter strangers feel entitled to march up and start telling me that "they shouldn't be allowed" "they're banned under the DDA" and other tosh. If the dog was that dangerous why are they risking life and limb by approaching him in the first place? In nearly all cases he is better behaved than both their children and animals!
Despite saying all that they are not a particularly easy breed of dog to own, they can be strong willed, will always take a mile if an inch is offered and can be very domineering if not well trained but it's even harder if there is this media led frenzy, based on half truths and the actions of bad owners. Those bad owners would have unpleasant dogs no matter what breed they owned as they wouldn't train them to be nice sociable dogs.
To go back to the original post, if the thread title was dogs and kids there wouldn't IMHO be the bias that has been shown to Rottweilers and there owners (us chavs:D ) hopefully it would all be about irresponsible parents letting a child walk a big dog unsupervised...........0 -
I would just like to comment (as the new 'chav' owner of a now 4mnth old Rottweiler and 3 children.. 2,7,9) that I think it's about time that people realised that the only reason the Rottweiler has such bad press is because 'Child mauled by Chihuahua' doesn't quite ring the same to the tabloids.
I am not denying the fact that there have been times when a maybe misunderstood dog has fatally injured a small child.. but why in the first place would a parent leave a child alone with ANY breed of dog, no matter how trusting..
I do not appreciate comments about the fact they are 'attack dogs' and 'vicious'as this would imply in a non direct manner, that I am infact putting my children in harms way by having this breed.. where as it is ok for me to strap my children into a car every day without a second thought when there are more deaths on the road than fatal dog bites..
The only issue here and one that seems to have been diluted into a 'let's diss the Rottweiler breed and their 'Chav' owners' conversation.. is the fact that an 11 year old child was walking an extremely powerful dog without supervision.. and therefore the owners of that Rottweiler are irresponsible and have no regard for dog or human safety.
Maybe those who believe the Rottweiler to be this awfully aggressive and nasty breed.. should infact take a look at what breed has been used in hospitals around the infirm as therapy dogs.. and in rescue looking for survivors (including the world trade centre collapse)..
All breeds have their good and bad traits.. but I guess the word Rottweiler will continue to raise fear in those not in the know on the breed.. ignorance is that which rises through lack of knowledge..
So.. here's to all those 'Chavs' out there, who are responsible enough to walk out of their 'Council Estate' homes and walk their dogs themselves.. without getting their 'Chav, Council Children' to do it for them.0 -
A Rottweiler is not a Dangerous Dog. I wish people would stop quoting the DDA when they have no idea what a dangerous dog is.
A DANGEROUS DOG IS ONE OF 4...YES..4 BREEDS and they are.....
the Pit Bull Terrier (No not a Staffie and they look nothing like Staffies)
the Japanese tosa
the Dogo Argentino
the Fila Brasileiro
If the dog is not one of these then it is not a Dangerous Dog.
A child shouldnt be walking any dog unsupervised no matter what breed it is.
Rottweilers are intelligent, gentle animals as are any dog breed. it is the stupid owners who choose to try and make them attack dogs that cause a dog to become out of control and a danger. Please note the difference between ''a danger'' and ''dangerous''.
Nobody should try and intervene when any 2 dogs are fighting. I know it is human nature but it is a dogs nature to fight for territory, to prove who is top dog or whatever reason.
Dogs do not speak human, they do not understand when we ask them to stop, that is why they need to be treated like animals....BECAUSE THEY ARE ANIMALS.
Rant over....sick of idiots who treat dogs like babies and wonder why they can't control them and then we get horror stories of Dangerous Dogs....Should be a bloody IDIOTIC OWNERS ACT 2009.

I have a rottweiler and a lab and my hubby has a staffordshire bull terrier, we don't live on a council estate and we are definitely not chavs. We are in fact two people who researched each breed of dog before buying them, we are responsible dog owners, not people who quote the DDA without knowing what we are talking about!0

We have had 4 rotties, got 2 at the moment, a 10yr old girl and a 3 yr old boy, and we have had nothing but love and absolute loyalty from every one of them.
They need good training when young (as any dog does). I am proud of my dogs and love them to bits.
PS. I'm not a chav either lol, I'm too old !!!!!!!!!0
