That's the same for me. The co-op gives a dividend but even so comes nowhere near the other stores for prices. A classic example is their own brand flour at 69p while Asda (and Tesco I believe) do it foe ~29p !

until recently ok last week I was working at sainburys ok on maternity leave so got 10%off and 15% at xmas and now I havent a clue where to shop, we have a sainsburys , morrisons and somerfield nearby. I can't stand morrisons food(i usually buy shops own) somerfield doesn't stock much eg no organic milk,potatoes or eggs and sainburys isn't quite as cheap as tescos or asda, so I have a full on dilema.
Do I carry on shopping at sainsburys and just try and get my bill down more, usually £50 for 5 of us without discount or shop around which could add more due to bus fares ect.
Think I need to do some research.

Most major supermarkets have similar prices on the basics. I usually shop at Tesco and I do notice a lot of sudden price rises and then the same items have a price cut. Customers will see that, say, Nescafe is now 50p cheaper having gone up £1 a couple of weeks before. You think you are getting a bargain, when you are not. Ot pays to be vigilant. Sometimes smaller packs are cheaper than larger ones. Always try and check the cost per kilo, although they try to confuse people by having some priced per kilo and others per 100g.

In the last few months I have tried to do a bit of price comparing when I have been shopping and have tried Asda and Tesco which are a bit out of the way for me. With a lot of the value brands it seems as though the prices are very similar with differences being a penny or two on things such as chopped tomatoes, bread, pasta, baked beans etc.
My local shop is Sainsburys so I do tend to go there but I have got more disciplined and don't just buy everything from there like I used to. I don't know if anyone else thinks the same but personally I think Sainsburys is pretty expensive and noticeably more than Tesco and Asda and many prices are comparable with M&S. As I get discount from M&S if it is like for like on a particular product then it is often cheaper to get it from M&S which sounds unbelievable.

Sainsburys can be good for the BOGOFs though, possibly more so than the others.

I now go to Lidl on my day off if I need anything and meal plan a bit more so know what I am going to bulk cook on my days off or when I have an early finish for my meals I take to work for lunch.

The Grocer magazine does a weekly review on an 'average' basket of goods from all the major supermarkets in an effort to resolve this question. The prices obviously vary each week, though in the long term Asda come out about 1% cheaper than Tesco, 3% cheaper than Morries and 5% cheaper than Sainsburys. Sainsburys have got a lot cheaper since their re-focus in the past year so may now be nearer to Tesco and Morries. The review doesn't include the discounters as it is difficult to get an 'average' basket from these shops

Is Morrisons quite good value? I have only been to one a couple of times when it was converting from a Safeway and I thought it was quite expensive but only popped in as it was the closest place that was open near a friend's house and we only wanted a couple of things.
Does it feature on price comparison sites?

I do think that Asda is cheaper. If I go into an unfamiliar supermarket I always spend more. However I have found that you have to be very careful with some of Asda's meat especially the mince as I find it often goes off before the sell by date. I have been shopping online at Tesco for the last 6 months mostly as we are saving up clubcard points.

One tip on the wine front is Morrisons Rio Rojo (for red lovers) at £2.99 and my local Tesco are doing Vina Mara Reserva at £3.99 (half price). Asda had 2004 Cuvee Julienne Chateau Neuf Du Pape at £5.98 and a very good San Pedro Chilean Cabernet at half price at £4.99.

Check https://www.superplonk.com to do a search of reviews of the cheapest wines at your supermarket of choice, there are some great bargains at Aldis and Lidls too.

I shop in Tesco's mainly but also go in the local Morrisons once a month (herbs and frozen veg are cheaper and a good selection of BOGOF's) and ASDA 3 monthly because its 10 miles away (frozen cauli and nuts very cheap but no BOGOF's).
ASDA has a habit of being 1p cheaper on staples but a few higher priced ones slip in here and there. Tesco's prices are the most variable and you can make good savings if you keep your eyes open and buy in bulk at the right time.
In all three stores you should be prepared to walk away from stuff that suddenly gets dearer.

I shop everywhere,asda,tesco,iceland and we have a cheap freezer shop called herons which has some brill offers.Im a real bargain hunter but ive the time as i only work part time and no little ones to care for but i do find asda cheaper than tesco but i think it all depends what you buy.
