I am the opposite to iwanna, until recently we only had an Asda and I used to drive out to a Tesco because in the Asda the prices were high and the quality was low. Since Tesco opened up the road there is more competition and Asda have had to pull their socks up.

I know Tesco extra charge more, but 10 per item is a bit steep  they are convenience stores only to be used in a dire emergency, my problem in a different supermarket is I always spend money on clothes or other none-food bargains:o

we don't have an asda on isle of wight so i don't personally know. but my husband's family used to live on mainland and they always shopped at asda, and my MIL said they were generally cheaper but products were slightly different. but she doesn't buy any value products so it totally a different kettle of fish for me.
we have a lidl just being built at mo so should be open sometime this year. i am hopinh that it will be worth it, as although not far it is going to be about 12 miles away ( thats alot for me as i live on isle of wight , lol ) but if i find it is better then i shall really make an effort to go there. maybe i'll do a once a month shop or somthing.

Just read about the box of wine. i buy from tesco a box of country manor it is £3.99 for a 3lt box, and it is so light . it is absoluty gorgeous. it last about 3 months. as we don't drink that much and i like wine mixed with lemonade to make a long drink with my meals. ( sad i know , but comes from the times when we had even less money and had to make things go along way )

I have shopped at both Asda ans Tesco, but Tesco is my supermarket of choice......it is close to us and we can walk if we have to or get the bus.

I feed two of us including meat for around £100 a month. I buy some value products, reduced stuff that can go in the freezer and some normal priced stuff, my veg I get from the market. The only thing I do not like Tesco for but really do not have a choice is fruit, I find the quality can be a bit iffy, I bought a bag of pears just before Christmas and had to throw 3 of them away because they were rotten, also had an orange go on me too, I am very fussy when I buy fruit and try and check it to mkae sure it perfect no blemishes. We have a market in the town but for two of us to go its actually cheaper to take the car and park in the car park..... once the free passes come in we will use the bus to go ito town and buy fruit from the market, it is so much cheaper and tends to be better quiality.

I have had several goes at Teasco about the quility of the fruit, but it rally does not seem to improve.

I noticed that when out small local Tesco became a tesco 'express' they started to only stock the more expensive and up-market brands. Where I live in Rainham, there is very little choice it's Tesco's or go hungry. There is a big superstore about a mile away but that is also Tesco's .
Sainsburys is about three miles away and Adsas is about 5 miles away. so Tesco has the monopoly. We used to have a coo-op but that closed down, but we do have a wilkinsons which is useful for cleaning bits and shampoos ect. When I lived in Barnehust I always shopped in Sainsburys ,but I have noticed that they have become more expensive over the years. As a pensioner I have the time to shop around and try to do so when I can. My daughter has five children and I wouldn't want her shopping bill each week. She shops on a Tuesday and again on a Saturday as she hasn't got the space to do one shop a week only having a small kitchen.I try to use my little local shops for odds and ends and always use my local butcher and grengrocers as I'm not keen on pre-packed sanitised food. In Rainham I am lucky as there is also a good 'wet'fish shop. There is also Whitstable fish market about half an hour away. So Tesco doesn't get all of my housekeeping. We also have a brilliant old-fashioned hardware shop that will sell you two or thee screws if thats all you want

I think they're about the same, but I go to Tesco because of Club Card. ASDA only seem to offer coupons if you use their credit card thing, which I don't like the idea of.

Tesco seem to do more BOGOF's too.

My experience is the same, I generally find Asda cheaper but tend to make a fortnightly trip to Tesco to see what their BOGOF offers are.

It's not cheaper for me because I would have to spend about £3 on buses and not be able to carry the shopping anyway. I have heard a lot of things are cheaper there but do not let 'cheap' be your main criteria. cheap is fine but cheap and nasty is not!
I would NOT buy 'fresh' meat there.

  • my nearest 'big' supermarket is a co-op and it's seems terribly dear with poor bogofs etc.
