I don't find much difference in price between Tesco and Asda. I think the OP spent more than normal because of moving over to a cook-from-scratch method. It is quite dear for a couple of weeks until you have built up a storecupboard of ingredients. I know the week I run out of cornstarch, chilli powder, dried herbs, baking powder, gycerin, etc all at the same time my bill goes up with a hefty jump.

As has been said all suerpmarkets are much of a muchness. And Asda did for a long time move away from BOGOF's and think that they found people went over to other supermarkets if they where nearer.

I tend to be a supermarket tart buying the BOGOF's from each store and doing a main shop in either Asda/Tescos. But that means a special Journey.

I am now going to try Morrisons now as my husband has Archery on a wednesday night. And Morrisons is about a quarter of mile on the other side of town from where he goes. And they seem to have some different joints of meat. like Pork hocks. yes they do have a bone in the middle of them. And do need a bit of cooker but I got huge one the other day for £1.59 and for the two of use would do at least two meals if not a little more. And dare I say would be perfect for the slow cooker.

Shame it is not thursday as it would be late night opening and I would then have time to do Tescos, somerfield and Sainsburys as well.

But I do go in town on a thursday morning anyway with mum. So I trying to cut down on the amount of shoping that I do and miles on the car. As we need to cut expenses to the bone at the moment. So really need a freezer so I really only need to do a major shop once a month.

It also costs money to convert from being a 'ding' cook to a proper cook. I've managed to pick up various baking tins, a decent knife and various bits within my normal food budget, but it has been tight. It is really starting to be worth it now.

  • I prefer Tesco's. Again mainly due to the clubcard vouchers. Today I had a delivery of food for the month, mainly cupboard food to last the month, few packs of mince meat, plus some offers and it came to £54 with delivery included. Will still have to buy a few bits of fresh items each week, but that is the main bit out of the way. The reason I like Tesco is that I had an extra 750 points coupon with my shop. So total points for this shop were 804, which converts to about £32 in deals. So in reality I only spent £22 on my shop. These points will go towards a holiday I am saving towards for next year. Since starting about 5 months ago, I now have about £415 towards next years holiday.

    Hope this helps.

Is Morrisons quite good value? I have only been to one a couple of times when it was converting from a Safeway and I thought it was quite expensive but only popped in as it was the closest place that was open near a friend's house and we only wanted a couple of things.
Does it feature on price comparison sites?
I don't usually go to Morissons, dont live near it. once i got a lift there and spent just over £20 for a week's groceries for me and 3 kids. This included fresh fruit and veg, and stuff i dont get every week like bleach and bin bags.

  • Your comments about tesco express surprise me - when they bought out the chain of convienience stores in this area everything got cheaper than before - still more than the local tescos though, but I dont mind that as they are providing a service on my doorstep at all hours that I dont need to get in the car to use.

On the whole I think that Asda is slightly cheaper than Tesco, but not much, and given the higher number of special offers, and clubcard points for me the balance is tipped in Tescos favour.

I also hate our local Asda as its so big it takes you ages to walk from one end to the other, and without being nasty a lot of the people who shop in our local Asda are quite rough and a bit weird whereas the other local supermarkets seem to atract the more normal people
