Well, I do not actually think that I am a pendant in the strict dictionary meaning of the word.
Awww, that made me chuckle. :)

"By the way, the thing that you use to receive a picture from your TV is called a TV aerial, and not a TV ariel."
Damn those spellcheckers - they never help us dyslexic folk with the stuff we really need correcting!

Oh and on a side note - I was watching a program tonight - I think it was the Science Institutions Christmas Lectures or something of that ilk. The presenter [no doubt a well educated man] used the term "pretty simultaneously" to describe the manner in which two different weight balls landed, obviously referring to Galileo and Newton's respective discoveries.

You would have been shocked! These mistakes are ingrained throughout our lives from when we are young - this 'teacher' being a perfect example. I say its a good job there are some vigilantes around to preserve our language! My parents tried hard with me but I still slip up all the time... *sigh*

Well, I do not actually think that I am a pendant in the strict dictionary meaning of the word. But I do hate to see bad spelling and grammar. Both of which are very common on this site. I can understand people pressing the wrong key, I often do it myself. But when the spell checker tells me that I am wrong then I correct it.
By the way, the thing that you use to receive a picture from your TV is called a TV aerial, and not a TV ariel.
An ariel is a Middle Eastern and African gazelle according to the dictionary.
Ariel is also the name of an Archangel as per Wikipedia.
Sorry, just being a bit pedantic!!!
Keep on posting, all you out there.

    Hi
that really made my day :D twice while complaining about someone elses spelling you described yourself as not being a Pendant LOL well not many of us are unless we hang around someones neck LOL

I see what you mean! I think this is what is known as being 'hoist with one's own petard.'
I will leave the spelling unedited, otherwise no one will know what you found so funny.
I still hold by what I said about posters on here taking more care with their spelling and grammar.
Never let it be said that I cannot take a joke against myself.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

  • From the OED:

There is a set of adjectives—including unique, complete, equal, infinite, and perfect—whose core meaning embraces a mathematically absolute concept and which therefore, according to a traditional argument, cannot be modified by adverbs such as really, quite, or very.

For example, since the core meaning of unique (from Latin ‘one’) is ‘being only one of its kind’, it is logically impossible, the argument goes, to submodify it: it either is ‘unique’ or it is not, and there are no in-between stages.

In practice the situation in the language is more complex than this. Words like unique have a core sense but they often also have a secondary, less precise sense: in this case, the meaning ‘very remarkable or unusual’, as in a really unique opportunity.

In its secondary sense, unique does not relate to an absolute concept, and so the use of submodifying adverbs is grammatically acceptable.

TV people lie, thats a fact, in reward for their lies they get £140ish from every single household in the uk, lets not forget that it was the BBC who were granted royal charter to charge a fee for their services, they were not granted it to charge for anybody elses services like channel5 and itv ! And a quick look at the tv licence website Q&A will show that after some FOI requests evidence from a detector van has never been used to prosecute anybody , ever, makes you wonder why they have never used this evidence in court when the vans apparently exist and work, also makes you wonder why (with the exception of a few parrot like repeats of some old propoganda) nobody can tell me how to reproduce this 1970's outdated technology with all the modern equipment they have today as it should be a breeze, also makes you wonder why the licence people have attained exemption from the FOI act regarding the workings of the mythical vans , apparently you can write to anybody , post office, delivery companies , milkman or Capita employees and remove their implied rights of access to your property which means they would be guilty of tresspass if they set foot on your land, my virgin contract expires later this year and i will be telling them and the licence people exactly where to go!
  • Just call the TV licensing people & ask them where you stand!

Personally, I wouldn't risk it - I HARDLY watch TV but I do still watch it sometimes, especially over Christmas. If you don't have a license you cannot watch TV full stop. At least with the license you still have a choice.

Please don't tell me you are this naive when it comes to these "people".

The only thing BBC TV Licensing are interested in is getting your money and will never be honest or believe the British public.

Check this video and you'll see first hand how they like to harass, intimidate and threaten people.
