People here are discussing issues about operating very close to the line of the law and looking for loopholes The law is clear,

People here are not looking for loopholes - the Law is what the people who enforce it make it.
TVL, who have to enforce this Law, (for all their many faults) have their own interpretation which they work to and they promulgate on their website.
THAT says quite clearly that a licence is NOT needed to install, own, or even use a television unless it is used to watch or record live television. No loopholes, no lines of the Law - that is what the people who have to enforce that Law say they understand by it.

If you believe that TVL are not enforcing the Law correctly write to them or your MP and complain.

Only if you want to break the law.

The OP isn't intending to break the law now, he's not going to watch TV.
Yeh, right we all believe that!!

I believe it. I pretty much never watch TV, I can't stand it! I do have a license at the moment since all my tenants/housemates want a TV in the lounge, but I have had huge battles with the TV Licensing folk when I had no ariel connected, no signal on the indoor ariel and only watched videos and played games on consoles on my TV.

I sorted that particular issue out in the end after quite a struggle... but this year I had even worse dealings with them. I spent far far far too many hours during the final year of my degree sending 30 or so letters to try and sort out their own system failure / admin error that meant they had never sent me a license despite having paid for it.

After one of their agents came round, a tenant of mine let him in and he then bullied me into signing the sheet that said I had no license [because they never *sent* me on]. Not realising quite the implications of this at the time, I continued to send them proof I had paid for the License again and again [via recorded delivery], and I even recieved confirmation that I was on their system as having paid!

Despite this, I was served a notice to attend court - which only arrived 15 days before the hearing. After much frantic seeking of advice from the CAB and a solicitor who thankfully gave me his advice for free and told me 'they hadn't a leg to stand on', I eventually got through to someone at the TV Licensing and a stop was put to the whole thing. Of course there was no apology, nothing... not even when I wrote to them again complaining about their conduct and process.

These guys are bullies. I now know not to let them into my home and have instructed my tenants to do the same. They also do not appear to understand their own rules - such as I was once told by an employee of theirs that my tenants do no need to have their own licenses if they do not have locks on their doors. This is nonsense and I later found out they *do* need them since they have separate tenancy agreements.

I think they would find it hard to prove that you have been watching TV if you have no ariel connection and no indoor ariel or TV recieving equipment connected to your computer [or internal tuner]. Stick to your guns, and don't let them intimidate you in my opinion.

Oh yes, and just to cement the point...

NEVER LET ONE OF THEIR ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS INTO YOUR HOME.

You are well within your rights not to. And these guys will use intimidation techniques to get what they want from you. [If you sign anything they will use that as evidence against you in court and the enforcement officer will act as a witness]

JUST GET RID OF THEM. And deal with the TV Licensing in very clear, but formal written terms, by recorded delivery. I do dispute the fact that you should have to pay for the cost of correspondence, but I don't know what to suggest regarding that.

Pretty well never watch TV, is not the same as never watch TV. Either you watch it or you don't.
It's like saying something is almost unique. There no degrees of uniqueness, it is either unique or it is not. No doubt I will be branded as a pendant, but what the hell. A fact is a fact.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Thanks for pointing that out. My grammar was indeed poor.

I have had times when I never watched TV [yes technically I still watched my TV in the sense that I looked at it whilst it displayed images from a DVD or game - as I understand it, it is generally considered acceptable to use the shorthand of 'watching TV' to mean watching broadcast programmes]

Because of this, thought I would challenge Roddydogs sarcasm & disbelief - it amazes me that some people seem to think it cannot be humanly possible to not want to watch TV?!

I guess I should have phrased it something like : "I rarely watch TV nowadays. I have very little desire to and at times I have watched no TV for more than a year at a time." Let me know how you would improve upon that. :)

Can you tell me - is there a name for the sort of linguistic mistake I made?
Also - have you heard of the "Spotty Ribbon" Campaign? It might make you feel better to know some others are also on the warpath with you.... http://www.isms.org.uk/spotty_ribbon_campaign.htm

And yes you are a pedant. :rotfl:

Well, I do not actually think that I am a pendant in the strict dictionary meaning of the word. But I do hate to see bad spelling and grammar. Both of which are very common on this site. I can understand people pressing the wrong key, I often do it myself. But when the spell checker tells me that I am wrong then I correct it.
By the way, the thing that you use to receive a picture from your TV is called a TV aerial, and not a TV ariel.
An ariel is a Middle Eastern and African gazelle according to the dictionary.
Ariel is also the name of an Archangel as per Wikipedia.
Sorry, just being a bit pedantic!!!
Keep on posting, all you out there.
