B'ham airport - is this right?

OH has just dropped our son off at BHX.

like a good little mse'r he had cabin luggage only, so kissed ma goodbye and stepped out of car.

that'll be £1, please!

a fee just for drop - off!! and stationary for 2 mins!

no chance of drop-off on roadside (double yellows, cones, security staff, etc.) without risking a confrontation, which OH wasn't up for.

drop-off charge allows 20 mins but does anyone seriously need this long to say goodbye?

I know this is only £1, but we're back to the principle thing.

I hear a lot of (sometimes justified ) groans about a/port parking fees but this moves into 'brass neck' territory.

ftr: next time I drop-off at BHX, it'll be roadside and possible arguments.

Were you at the drop off point at the entrance of longstay 2? I though that used to be free as long as you were quick. Passengers have to get the bus then.

Many airports charge to drop off now in my experieince though.

That used to be the short term parking. But since a group of Doctors tried to use Glasgow airport as a drive through it has become the drop off zone and the charge was applied a bit later.
  • thanks for the explanations but I'm still amazed.

can't think of any other service point that charges for simply coming to a halt! (although someone else might).

Hint for future- drop son off at train station, he can then take the rail link across (for free)

Yep, that's what we do every time. Follow the signs to Birmingham International station, not the airport. You get out by the bus stop and there are escalators and lifts to the first floor concourse. From there get the Maglev train. It runs every couple of minutes. (Late at night and early morning you need to summon it by pressing a button.)

The Maglev drops you inside Terminal 1 next to Frankie & Bennys, (where they do an excellent Express Breakfast for £5.45.) To check in you take the lift to the ground floor where the desks are.

The car park charge is a complete ripoff, although you can also do what the staff do - they get dropped off on the roundabout before the charging area and walk up, through Terminal 2 if it's raining.
