How much would you charge?

I have a friend who is living with me as he has split from his wife, he currently is paying £200 per month to me. He pays mortgage payments etc to his wife currently for his house. Do you think I am undercharging? I have sky, setanta, phone and broadband.

Does he have a room or is he kipping on the couch?
  • Hi
I think that is a right amount, but it does depend on whether he is sleeping on the couch, using the phone etc.
I am assuming he eats at your house, does he bring shopping home to help out.
Have you discussed with him how long he will be staying.
  • See what the rate for a room in a shared house is in your area, knock off a bit as he's a friend , include a contribution for food and see if that's much different from what you've agreed.

it all depends on what he gets for his £200 - is he at home all day? does he use the washing machine? Does he have the heating on full blast?

Things like "sky, setanta, phone and broadband" you would pay for anyway, with or without him there. But if you think he could afford more and you could do with a bit mote maybe ask for an extra £50-£75 more per month. This is if he has as room. It sounds like he is going through a lot.
  • hello
i think thats charge are cheap.
  • I charge £75 a week excluding food, I don't have sky

hmmm if it wasnt costing me any more (ie we worked the same hours etc etc) to have a mate here whilst he was going through a break up with his missus i wouldnt even dream of charging! As long as we approximately split food / takeaways / beers etc that'd be fine!

If you have a family / wife then would take a slightly different line..

Does he buy his own food, toiletries, washing powder etc. Are all the bills included?
