I love to go to London but also could not think of living there. The people do not make eye contact, and if you are in trouble on the street, forget it. My DH saw a well dressed young woman, double up as if in pain at the entrance to a tube station. He could not believe that people passed her by without asking if they could help,he stopped to help, and it turned out she was having a miscarriage. He left after the paramendics arrived. Up north she would have been inundated with help. The buzz of London cannot compensate for the dog eat dog attitude that is prevalent there. The big cities up north Manchester, Leeds,Liverpool,Newcastle all have a similarcsomoplitian feel without the coldness. Job opportunities in the northern cities also abound, and coupled with decent housing, cost of living(compared to London)and proximity to green space.....it cant be beaten.

I beg to differ. People do care!

I was on the bus the other week (one of the bendy buses), and it was so packed, I was leaning against the doors. I wasn't paying attention, and when the bus pulled up at the next stop, the doors opened, and I literally fell off the bus, or would have, but luckily at least four people grabbed me to stop me from falling. So, see, spontaneous helping of another person!
  • Move up north. We're friendlier, you're less likely to be knifed or gunned down and it's only a little colder. You can pop down to Nodnol on the weekends if needs be :) and if you're missing city life move to Manchester city centre.

Bit of a generalisation there about crime. There are bits of Manchester where the odds of being knifed or gunned down aren't that wonderful either!

Not my experience. I've both helped and been helped by many people in London who I don't know.

Top bar, quality real ales served 1.75 a pint, its grim up North :D

That's my regular haunt when I visit Chester. Top hotel and a great breakfast.

Loads of real ales - delicious.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.
  • Stop, stop , stop telling them southerners it's nice up North!!!!!

It's horrible really, rains all the time, the houses are only cheap cos the rain leaks in.

You won't get in without a flat cap and a whippet and the ability to say "on Ilkley Moor baht hat" fluently.

We kill our first born and have a thoroughly squalid existence.

You don't really want to move to cheaper housing, less crime, more countryside, less congestion and friendlier folk? Do you?!?

My family on my mothers side are all Londoners and I spent every school holiday staying with my nan, at the time (and quite a few years have passed...think I am getting old now!), it was a wonderful place to be and everyone could not have been more helpful.

My trips to Manchester could not have been more different, in the local chip shop I was ignored and the person behind me served and when they finally did serve me, took the pee out of my accent.

Mind you, these are isolated incidents, you will find good and bad in any town/city and maybe I was just unlucky to get the pee takers. I have also visited Scotland, the people there have been absolutely wonderful every single time.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Right, you've really p****d me off. When I finally get shot of my kids I'm heading north.
I never really beleived the scripts of say Coronation Street ie. houses for £90K, leases and goodwill on a betting shop for £10K and factory girls that have a few drinks and lunch in the pub and are back there again in the evening. Well I beleive it now from all your posts.
I would like to set the records straight re. wages down here. From a few of the posts, you may imagine we all earn £100K+, in reality most earn £30-40K and a great may work 6 days a week.
When I talk about London I mean the suburbs not Central London. Most of us in Essex, Herts, Bucks, Kent etc. if we commute to work have the additional joy of a £2,000 a year season ticket as well.
Unfortunately we are all victims of our childhood and most stay there for life. From all your posts I conclude that there are very few advantages to living in the S of England and it is surely not worth the sacrifices that we have to make.

Not my experience. I've both helped and been helped by many people in London who I don't know.

I am sure that there are, of course, people in London who are helpful and kind to strangers, there are nice people everywhere, but in general Londoners are more cynical and world weary and thus less inclined to help, in case the circumstances are not as they first seem.

I was born & bred in Yorkshire till my middle twenties. Lived in Africa (hubby's job) for several years. Came back to UK and moved south because of hubby's job.
He said we would only have to stay here for a couple of years. Oh yeah, that was 30 years ago and we're still here.

In Yorkshire, people are much more friendly - neighbours actually talk to each other. Strangers will start up a conversation in the supermarket or where ever you are.

I live in a fair sized, four bed, two bathroomed house house and have a swimming pool in the garden. But I would still swop it for a small house up in Yorkshire.

Difficult to move now as my sons, and grandchildren are all down here.
I couldn't bring myself to move so far away from them.

I do agree though, it's darned cold up north in the winter.
