Do not touch Yamata sewing machines. Just do a search for Joys sewing machines which are the same company. They change their name every so often. I've never had one but i've heard so many bad reviews about the machines. Please save your money.0 -

Thanks for the reply. I have just been given a Bernina 640-2 from someone on Freecycle. It looks perfect. I have only had time to have a quick 'play' with it but it seems to run very smoothly. All I need now, is to find an operating manual.
I'm very glad I didn't go for the Yamata sewing machine.

You've got a real gem there with that Bernina. I've owned nearly every series starting with the 540 and there hasn't been a bad machine. They are very sought after actually and would go for good money on ebay. Well done!0

I am sick and tired of my old Toyota sewing machine - I spend longer coaxing it along than I ever do sewing. So I've decided to treat myself to a new machine. I make lots of gifts and home furnishings so it will be moneysaving in the end!
So - can anyone reccommend a good quality machine that will be very easy to use, reliable and good tempered? The mystery of tension (apart from the tension headache I get trying to set it up) has always been my biggest bugbear, so if a machine exists that has an easy way to cope and take the guess work out of changing tension for different fabrics and projects that would be my first and highest priority.
Other than that I would like a variety of stitch types (as I like to do applique and decorative quilting), a hard cover and easy bobbin winding.
I've been told that Janome and Brother are probably the best, but will consider anything.
I have a budget of £300 ish, I would prefer to spend less if I can but could actually stretch it a little further for the right machine.
Thanks for any advice you can offer both on machine models and best place to buy.0 -

Can anyone help? I just bought a Singer 201k (the hand cranked one that weighs about a million tonnes but looks lovely!). How do I do backstitching? I'm trying to copy a pattern and it says I should backstitch the corner bits but when I go backwards, it just unpicks all my stitches??0

The machine itself won't sew backwards but you can backstitch with the machine.
Sew up to the point you want to stop - leave the needle down in the fabric - lift the presser foot - turn the fabric 180 degrees - lower the presser foot - sew slowly back along the line of previous stitching.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Hello,
I know this post is a bitout of date, but it was useful to me as I am getting a new sewing machine for Christmas. I used to have a Janome, but I amlooking to get aToyota and it was nice to see that they came recommended by alady on a previous forum that was linked to this one. I want a machine thatwill last and the fact that she had hers for years is good enough testimonialfor me. Happy Christmas and Happy Sewing.0 -
