  • Yes I've seen some cheapy ones in Asda, and Dunelm have them for less still if I remember correctly. I've also seen fancier looking ones in Lidl periodically for about £70.........

Just not sure if these unknown brands are any good and whether there is anything I should look out for.
  • Apparently they are on the Aldi specials for either this week or next not sure which and don't know how much.Their website might help.
  • I bought my 1st machine from Lidl as like you wanted to know if I'd actually use it before shelling out .... I did use it but it broke after about 12 months.

As it only cost about £40 it wasn't worth paying to get it fixed so bought a new one. I paid a lot more (£250 at the time) but it was worth every penny, you can really tell the difference using it.

Just wondering if you lovely people could give me a recommendation for a good sewing machine to buy? It is a big purchase and I want to be sure of getting the one that is right.

Am looking at making clothes, curtains, etc. So will be stitching denim, velvet, cotton etc wide range of fabrics. Thought it could save me money.
    THanks

I had a Brother XL5001 sewing machine given to me :) I find it's good for basic stitching, zigzagging etc.

I have heard that Janomes are good. Not sure how much they cost, though.

  • I'm looking at the argos value sewing machine right now. Does anyone own one? What do they think of it? £60 seems a reasonable price compared to lots. I want it to be able to handle silk, as I ike silk painting, but also know I wanna make some denim curtains, cushions etc for the living room later in the year. I want a machine that can cope with simple stiches on a range of fabrics, rather than one that can do fancy embroidery on cotton iykwim.

i own a singer which i love but janomes and brothers are supposed to be very good

  • I have a Janome which is very good. It is a bit up the range and not the basic model as I use it a lot. I can't remember how much I paid as I bought it in the sale two years ago. I have stitched all weight clothes with it and it has been fine. Compared to my old machine it seemed really lightweight and I was worried that it would move when sewing heavier items, but it has been fine.
  • I have a Janome and I absolutley love it. It's a compact model, about 10 years old and I bought it second hand for £30. It's the perfect size and does your straight and zigzag stitches and has a reverse button. It comes apart quite easily for cleaning.

I had a go on a new-ish Singer machine and that really did sew like a dream. Much more expensive though,

I think if you stick to one of the big brands - Singer, Janome, Brother - you'll be fine

Have a think about what size you want too. A full size machine but they can be a pain if you want to pack it away after every use or take it to a class/friends house. Mine is light enough to carry around with one hand, and it's plenty big enough for making clothes and home furnishings. I wouldn't go for the really mini ones though.
