I have a Janome overlocker and a Janome sewing machine and highly recommend that brand for durability and ease of use! BTW, I don't have a 'top loading bobbin' but it really isn't a difficult thing for me so don't worry too much about that bit. HTH. :)

I bought a Silvercrest machine for £59.99 from Lidl a week ago and I'm delighted with it. It does a large range of stitches including an overlock stitch and supports two needle sewing. I've shown it to more experienced sewers who think it's fantastic for the money. If you take a look at my earlier posts you'll find a link to the manual (actually to a very similar machine, think mine's got a different model number but does all the same stuff).

  • Just brought home a Janome DM1018 from dunelm mill for £100. There were 6 boxes left in Canterbury Store.

I got a second hand Lidl's machine last winter from a charity shop and I was so impressed with it I bought their latest model a few months ago for £60 I think. They're not computerized or anything but have plenty of stitches and are good....If you just want a basic machine you could do far worse....old brands are victoria (think that's what mine was called)...new brands = silvercrest or something...

    Hope that helps someone

  • I bought a new one a couple of years ago from John lewis - good range and helpful, knowlgable staff.

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add this to the existing thread to give you more ideas.

Hey there! I just bought one second hand but on my travels I found that Sainsburys online have reduced a lot of their sewing machines to the point that for the basic models they were the cheapest I could find. Take a look here, the Singer 1507 seemed to have good reviews and is only around £70.

Also, John Lewis have a special offer on this Janome machine for £89.

Also, if you do a search on ebay for the Brother LS-2125, there's a seller who has bids going on new machines, they seem to go at around the £50-60 mark with £10 postage on top.

    Hope that's some help! :)
  • Hi, I don't post in this section much but I'm thinking of getting myself a sewing machine and thought this would be the best place for advice!

I'm very much a novice, so nothing to complicated or too expensive (as I might not do much). I have made a couple of items in the past using my mum's machine, and I'd like to have a bash at making some clothes and maybe household items. I also want to be able to do things like repairs on a machine rather than either hand sewing them or asking my mum nicely!

I've seen the mini sewing machines recently and they got me thinking about getting my own machine, particularly as something small would be easy to store but I'm not sure if they are any good.

    What would you advise?

    Thanks :)
