I learned my sewing machine skills on the old treadle! my mum had the old hand cranked one and the treadle nan had was so much easier but years older!!! then i worked in a factory with (another make) electric knee operated machines and the darn things broke down so often they had two maintenance men! nothing ever went wrong with the old machines that a bit of light oil wouldnt fix!!! go for it girl - and if you miss out on that one then local auctions often have them and they go quite cheaply! compared to the allsinging alldancing models they have now! and straight stitch is the most used stitch if you want to make curtains cushions or even clothes - they can all be done with straight stitch!

I've got one but I use it as a side table! My son found it in the street. I can't sew anymore!

When I was 10 a friend of my mom's died and we ended up with hers.
I used it to make cushions and clothes for my Tiny Tears doll. I loved it so much! I've now got a modern elctric but still have fond memories of that treadle machine and the lovely smell of the oak table as I sat there sewing.
If a 10 year old can do it, you can.
Practice with bits of cloth you don't want any more.....
Is it expensive, just out of nosiness?

I've got my mother's Singer -she got it for her 21st birthday in 1955-it's outlasted the electric machine that DH bought me about 20 years ago.

It does only do straight lines but thats all I really need it for. I'm quite happy to do button holes by hand.

Be warned though.. any kind of vague fiddling and the timing is thrown off.. this includes moving to vacuum under it, dusting it and looking at it from the wrong side of the room.. Then it costs a small fortune to find someone to reset it..

I hate mine.. in fact.. if you want it... dust gathering heap in the corner..
