think I would be tempted to put the veg patch on the lower "grassy" area - it looks bigger - is it? you could always extend onto the other patch at a later date ;)

if you are thinking ahead to selling... then a "sitting area" nearer the house always looks good and if you sell to non-gardeners (perish the thought :rotfl: ) then if the veg patch is at the bottom of the garden, they can "forget" about it until they have time to do what they want with it.

I would go for the lower grassy area too. The more sun the better:D (Though you could grow things like lettuce and brassicas in the shadier bit)

Hi Yategirl - you're right, it is bigger. And it gets more sun, I think.

As for sitting areas, there's a stone-paved patio just by the house, raised up by about four feet, cos its up a hill (all that terracing!). There's an area beyond *both* potential veg patches thats very shady, and I've been planning to dig that over and just mulch it, to have a shaded summer seating area (if the sun ever comes out again in summer). That was because the patio gets the sun literally all day long, which is lovely but damaging to my skin, which is very thin and quite fragile, so its impossible to sit out on hot days.

    Thanks for the feedback!

EDIT: thanks Sylvan - okay, glad I thought of sticking that in there too. Now I have to work on my pepper dusting skills. Not on the bit where I plan to grow, but around it, there's a *lot* of dog and cat mess.

"ND EDIT: offline now, lots of work - thanks folks.

a shady sitting area sounds good... nice to have different areas in a garden to sit if you have space :) you could even (at some point) make it an all weather sitting area - make a covered pergola.

can you get to a starbucks (or similar) shop easily? if you get hold of lots of coffee grounds.. you can spread them over the area where the cats go (do dogs have access to the garden now?) - I did this in my front garden and as well as protecting plants from slugs and snails... it did keep the neighbours cats off... (coffee grounds are wonderful in your compost heap too ;) )

Some summers, I've literally been trapped in the house, with it being so sunny, and nowhere to sit out thats in the shade, its crazy. A covered pergola - not for me, I'm afraid - one more nesting place for a spider to fall on top of me from!

Yes, I can - tho I thought I read something about a dog dying from straight coffee grounds, and starbucks had stopped doing it? Dogs and cats *do* have access to the garden, I'm afraid - no fences at either side, and next door's has a dog. And my garden is a disputed territory between toms, so there's quite a lot of toing and froing. And before I started gardening, a few years ago, I found a fox sleeping in my garden in the sunlight! Its a great idea tho - my one remaining luxury is roast coffee, Tesco basic, I must start saving the grounds again. And eggshells.

    Thanks!

MRS MCAWBER I'm not one of the super bloggers, but just to say, I'm not really sure what you mean, sorry.

As my memory tells me offhand - I type in my post and then it asks me if I want to post it and there is an "edit" option there - I scroll down to the little narrow box at the bottom (ie at the bottom beneath the wide box I post in) and type in a word or two to indicate what the post is about - in my case that might be "environmental" or "food" or a variety of other things. Then I click to post my "post" onto the blog. As soon as I have typed that word "food" in the first time in that narrow little box (as an indicator that some of my posts will be about food) then the word "food" will appear in the sidepanel on the blog. Any future posts I do on "food" (and remember to type the word "food" in that narrow bottom panel) will then automatically be "added in" under that heading.

Having done this - if anyone just wants to read only that part of my blog that relates to food - they just click on the word "food" in that sidepanel and only those posts will come up.

If you go over to my blog and try clicking various subject headings I have on the side of the page you will see what I mean.

I hope thats clear - come back if its not.

EDIT; just had a quick looksee at my own blog - "Labels" thats the word I want. So the above is how to do "labels".

To put labels on those posts you have already done - sign in to your blog and up comes the "Dashboard" page - click on "edit posts". Look through your list of posts you have made to date. When you see the title of a post you want to edit - click the "edit" bit by the side of the title. Your post will come up. You will see the two boxes - the wide box with your post in and the narrow box at the bottom. Type the word label you want into that narrow box and then re-post that post. You should see the word/s you have chosen for the label have come up automatically in the "labels" position on the side.

I dont think I had to do owt in the first place to get that labels section in place. If I havent remembered properly and this isnt sufficient - I'll go back through and try and figure out whats what.

It may well do it automatically when you start adding lables, however if it doesn't you will need to go to the layout tab and click on the right hand side where it says add gadget scroll down until you find Label and then click the blue Plus icon on the left, it will then appear on the right - you can rearrange the order by clicking on the boxes and dragging them to the required position.

Hope that helps if it's not automatic.
