  • Lol what a con, phoned straight away and the line was silent. Just a scam to get you to call up. Bet they don't even have the tvs in the first place to sell.

  • It's quite depressing that supposedly diligent customers such as those found here @ moneysavingexpert fall for such blatent (but legal) scams.
I suppose the general(ly stupid) population don't stand a chance.

That show must make a bucket load of cash from stupid people.

There is no scam about it - there are 30 tv available, and thousands and thousands of people who want them.

Its a lottery I agree, but I'd rather give this a go (and it hasn't even connected*, thus can't be charged), than, for example, those reverse auction things

*If it goes silent - its because its connected, but failed at their end, and you'll be charged. If you get a click noise, and a tone, its failed to connect and you won't, and can't be charged.
  • Its not a scam as such, as they do exactly what they say, and they say the price of the call is £1.50 even if you don't get through to buy etc. etc. The OP stressed this several times.

    BUT

You have to remember this is on TV, the net and in several national red-top papers today (but again to be fair, I watched this a little while ago and the TV cam on, and he did say it had been in the national papers)... so yes probably 10,000 or more people are all going to try to get in on the deal, and yes, they probably more than cover the loss on the price of the actual TVs on all those phone calls.

I've no doubt that they really do have the TVs - its brilliant advertising if your mate down the pub announces he's just got a fab new telly for £100 quid isn't it?

Is it a swiz? - not really, but it is very good clever marketing.

The bit I don't like is that the £1.50 call charges and the £7.99 p&p charges (on most things) are in very small type at the top of the screen, and easy to miss... I personally think they should be made to print these on screen the same size as the price of the actual product on offer, and preferably in the same box as the product price, and even a total inclusive price for those whose mental arithmetic isn't too sharp.
The spiel goes "blah blah you're only paying £5 for this" etc. etc.... and people forget about the £9.50 on top it is costing them for the call and delivery - and they never seem to actually say out loud the delivery or call price.

Price-drop TV and its sister channels are unlimately owned by Virgin, in case you didn't know... I have to admit Branson has always been a hero of mine!
In the probably unlikely event that I actually post something of use to someone, an ickle vote of thanks would be much appreciated, in fact I might frame it and put it up on the wall next to my cycling proficiency certificate :D
  • Interesting to know that the company owners of this channel are sit-up tv which is part of the Virgin Media group.
I wouldn't buy from them, as anyone charging a £1.50 a min phone call to buy goods from them sounds alarm bells to me. Plus the extorinate p&p charges which seems to be the same from something like a watch to a tv... what's that all about??

I did like watching one of the presenters on the old bid-up channel... Mike Mason...... that was good entertainment (look on you tube)... though i'm not sure if he actually sold anything lol
  • Hi,

I just tried this, I rang as soon as the number cam up and then it went through and was silent for a minute or two. At the end it said "Sorry, there has been a technical fault".

Does anyone know if the number to call was the same at 7.45 as it was at 9.45? I know they changed the number from the other auctions, but did they also change it from the number two hours earlier for the TV?

Also, if you get through, do you press 1 immediately? Or wait for them to say press 1?

    Thanks for your help.
  • No idea... but not surprised their phone lines melted given the mass advertising all over the Uk today

  • it was a different telephone number each time, the presenter said so. i got thru to a voice message saying the cost of the call was now 5p per minute despite not winning the auction, surely the line should just go dead if you dont get thru.
i dont mind paying the p+p charges on some things as they are still a bargain against high st prices, for example i won 3 gents aftershaves which i took a chance on and afterwards i checked them out on amazon, the total should ahve been 64.97 before p+p, i paid 16.98 including p+p.
