OK, tried the following settings with varying amounts of joy:-
Main drive - Cable select
2nd drive - CS Enabled
Can only see main drive in Computer management
Main drive - Master with slave
2nd drive - CS Enabled
Can only see main drive in Computer management
Main drive - Master with slave
2nd drive - No jumper (DS Slave according to sticker)
Can only see main drive in Computer management
I know I have another few options, but I can't see where I'm going wrong.
Anyone any ideas?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Just made a list of all the jumper options on both drives to see if it helps anyone:-
Main drive:
Pins 1&2 - Cable select - J8 Jumper settings
Pins 3&4 - Slave - Standard Settings
Pins 5&6 Master with Slave - Standard Settings
No jumper - Single/Master only - Standard Settings
Backup drive (no numbers on pins):
First set - DS (Master)
Second set - CS Enabled
Third set - Cap Limit
No jumper - DS (Slave)
Hope that helps somebody - didn't help me

Hang on...you're not setting the drives up in the BIOS?
What makes are the harddrives, and what make and model is your computer? If you don't feel comfortable telling me this information in public, then PM me - but none of it could be used to identify and/or hack you.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
The backup is a Maxtor - can't remember what the main one is without taking things apart again.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Hi all
I've just tried installing a new HDD as a back-up. Wired it all up using the IDE cable, left the jumpers on "Cable Select" and plugged it (according to the sticker on the cable) as "Primary Slave 1".
The computer's not seeing it.
Anyone any ideas?Don't know if it helps/hinders/makes no difference, but the cable has two connectors on it. One marked Primary Master and the other marked Primary Slave.
I've plugged the new drive into primary slave and left the jumper settings alone as they were already on "Cable Select"if you have found that out then you have one jumper so use it on the main hdd, install the new hdd as slave as it doesn't req a jumper and if you need another pm me ur address an i'll put one in post have a few spareOK - the original HDD came pre-installed from <ahem> Tiny and doesn't have any jumpers in it. With no jumpers in it, it assumes it's the only drive on that cable which is what caused some of the original problems which are now solved.
The new HDD was "acquired" from work and that doesn't have any jumpers with it either. That doesn't need any as it will assume it's a slave.
Should my local computer shop have them?
no offence m8 but it's a bit tricky working out whats going on when you contradict your self, we all like a puzzle but thats pushing it.
anyway at this point i have to ask,
a. What makes you think this new drive is a working unit?
b. does the bios actaully detect this new drive?
c. Do you know the diff between ata33 and ata66/100/133?
as for a, depends on the answer to b but you could just boot with no cd, both drives on sep cables as masters or try dl a linux llive cd and boot from that to make sure its not a windows issue
c. might be an issue as tiny went bust some time ago this will be a very old bios in that machine.

OK - to try and answer your questions in order:-
a) It works - it came out of a working machine that was being got rid of. The HDD works and I was in the right place at the right time to get hold of it.
b) No - it doesn't detect in either automatic or manual mode (I've been into BIOS and tried to force a detection on the Primary slave
c) Short answer is no.
Apologies for any confusion but I was trying to explain what's on the stickers and what options I'd tried with the jumpers.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I had 2 half broken computers a few weeks ago that I pieced together to get the best I could
For some reason I had to use a 40 wire IDE cable for the 2nd hard drive to work (the dvd drive was the master and the 2nd hard drive the slave if memory serves correct ~ I left an 80 wire cable on the master hard drive)

ok examine the cables attaching the drives and if they are different go with plan a. set both drives as masters and attach to end of each cable.
if the bios still fails detection swap the cables over and try again.
a ata33 cable will have thick ribs whilst an ata 66/100/133 will be finely ribbed you should notice a major diff either visually or running a finger across the cable
sorry but really can't remember if their where any issues surrounding ata 133 drives on ata33 cables etc, maybe some one else got a 33 controller to try this on?click here to achieve nothing!0 -
OK - just looked at the link that AlienErik posted, I've got 40-wire IDE connectors.
Looking through the stuff on that page, should I put the DVD-drive as master and the new HDD as slave?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Try everything and anything mate
Write down everything you try and try to systematically figure out the correct way
MOST motherboards would just 'work' using master and slave regardless of anything else. Others can be a nightmare:idea:0
