On the original hard disk, what does no jumpers assign to? master slave or CS?

Is there a jumper on the CD drive?

    Did you check the bios?

Local shop - Possibly, possibly not, as all drives come with them, they aren't normally needed except when they go missing.

An alternative if you have usb2?? (usb1 is slow), is an external hard disk caddy

    OK - in order:-
No jumper is master with no slave.
Can't prise it out of the case, but it doesn't look like it.
I did - and all seems fine in there - they are all on auto-detect.
I could get a caddy, but I'm trying to keep things tidy with as few mains wires as possible.

Went into BIOS earlier and tried hitting the option to detect the hard-drives. Didn't make much difference.
No other PC's around - might have to have a word with work's IT department (I got the HDD from them)

Me + Soldering iron = Not a good idea

Just a note: CS or Cable Select only works if the hard drive cable you are using supports it. Not all do.

OK - main HDD doesn't appear to do CS as no jumper means only drive on that cable. I will need a jumper to say that it is the master but with a slave attached.
Looks like it's going to mean buying some jumpers and getting the screwdriver out again.

It's an 80GB HDD - which matches what is already installed.

Jumpers cost next to nothing, and any decent computer shop will give you a couple for free. If you have a spare CD/DVD drive, borrow a jumper off that for over the weekend.

The harddrive in the Tiny machine will come out - usually just screws in, or tabs you lift away from the sides of the drive. Take a picture of the existing drive in the machine, trying to show how it's installed and post it here.

Ideally, you need to jumper the existing old drive as Master, and the new drive as Slave - and put the new drive in the middle on the ribbon cable, while keeping the existing drive at the end of the cable.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

    Hi basmic
I've had the original HDD out of the case and there are no jumpers on it. The label on the top shows how to make it aware that it's master with a slave attached and the newd rive label shows no jumpers to make it a slave.

I'll get some jumpers over the next few days and see what happens. If I don't reply at some point, you'll know I've blown myself up!!

Use the master / slave selections instead of cable select. Make sure the IDE cable is mated correctly (it's easy to plug it in slightly left or slightly right, so that 2 pins aren't plugged in at all. Also check each drive for missing or bent pins, as these can cause havoc for other devices in the IDE chain.

You also should go into the BIOS each time you change configuration to auto-detect new IDE devices, as often older BIOS's won't do this automatically themselves.
