    Hi Rikki,

All the recipes are showing for me at the moment, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Was this the recipe you were looking for?

I love chinese takeaway, most particularly beef curry and special fried rice and long to save money and cook my own.

I've done a massive amount of research but they seem to keep their secrets close to their chest.

What i have found out is that most use Goldfish Brand Chinese Curry Concentrates for the curry sauce and I'm trying to track down a good online supplier (we don't have any Chinese supermarkets here) that can deliver at a reasonable price. I've found the concentrate as low as £1.20 but postage costs £5 so that kinda defeats the object.

So my questions to anyone in the know are does anybody know where i can order some of this concentrate cheaply (with delivery) of the internet and what makes up a typical Chinese takeaway beef curry ?

Also what mushrooms do they use in these curries as they are nearly always whole and just delicious. Would they be boiled button mushrooms perhaps ?

Any help trying to make the perfect authentic Chinese takeaway beef curry with special fried rice would be fab.

    Thanks guys.

  • Whilst I cant tell you an exact recipe, I can tell you that the Chinese take aways that I know of all make their own curry and dont use concentrate. It uses a variety of spices which you arent likely to get to know the quantities of, dried banana skin, dried orange peel.........all sorts.Sorry I cant be of more help.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Thanks little tinker and yes i agree some would likely make up their own. But a huge portion, from my understanding, use concentrate bought in huge tubs and thats likely the taste i'm trying to reproduce here as its more likely the ones i've tasted use that.

And thanks Pink winged i'll look at that thread and see what i can get from it.

Help on effectively cost cutting the purchase of this concentrate and how to make a beef curry that looks and tastes like that of those takeaways will still be of immense help.

I love my beef curry and would love to reproduce it here :)

    Thanks again guys.

I find that the chinese curry cooking sauce from asda tastes quite similar to the chinese takeaway curry we get from where I live.

Obviously all takeaways are different though, even here it varies, some are really aniseedy tasting and some are just blow your head off spicy, lol

But I was quite impressed with the asda sauce tbh

Most of the ones I know of (I'd guess at least 20+) use a powder or concentrate of some sort. Other ones used include those on the list posted by PW. Might be worth trying other ones you like if you don't have a catering supplier locally (many do it, not just chinese supermarkets), Maysan is stocked in many butchers, Makyway you'll find in the likes of Asda etc.

The likes of https://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk do free delivery over specific order amounts.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • danz0l we use this brand and it is fab - better than any of our local takeaways and a tub makes loads of curries (just add water and boil till it gets to the consistency you like). we haven't bought a takeaway for almost a year:j

we buy it at 1.55 a tub from a thai grocer but would love to get it cheaper. where did you see it for 1.20 a tub online. i know wingyip sell it online and we are considering a bulk order next time we run out of our stash! we love the hot and spicy version but i have seen the normal version in a large caterers tub online - this might work out cheaper for you?

Thanks guys. I had a curry last night from the local takeaway and really investigated the ingredients.

It appears they use frying steak in the beef curry and add mushrooms and raw cut onions but couldn't see anything else added. They stir fry it in god knows what oil (anyone any ideas ?? possibly peanut butter ??) and then add the concentrate, likely the goldfish brand. I long to reproduce that flavour as i truly love the taste so i'm certainly going to give it a go.

First i must track down the cheapest way of getting that Goldfish Brand Chinese Curry Concentrate. I can't remember where i saw it for £1.20 chardonnay so i'll try and track it down. What put me off was the £5 delivery charge although i guess if you bulk the order it would work out in the end.

I hope someone can come up with an authentic takeaway recipe but if not we can all trial and error to get that "near as" taste from home.
