You can get jars of Wing Yip curry paste in Sainsburys - you can normally find it on the 'speciality' food shelves. You just scoop out the paste into a saucepan, add water and bring to a simmmer until it thickens. This stuff is exactly the same as the curry sauce my local Chinese takeaway uses. It's seriously nice poured over a plate of chips!

thanks for this will get some next time im shopping

  • My husband swears by the curry sauce from the Chinese food wholesalers. Last time we bought some it came in tins. I went into Sainsburys the other day and spotted their basics curry sauce - 8p a jar - tried it and its not bad at all and the ingredients seem pretty basic. Husband didn't think it was nearly as good as the Chinese curry sauce but was impressed (and he loves making his own curries from scratch) and we were amazed at how they can sell it for 8p - and that's not even on special offer. I will definitely be keeping a jar or two in to go over my chips when hubbies away.

Hi,try wingyip.com, you can e-mail them for a recipe too.
    Hope this helps.
  • I have tried a number of the curry sauce pastes mentioned and found that they do tend to be quite good, but I too thought they lacked a certain something. I added a knorr chicken stock cube and voila! just like the chinese takeaway.

Mayflower is great, seriously it is so yummy and so thick

I'd advise getting a cooked chicken, if you are near a Morrisons they will sell you a half chicken over the counter, tesco do small and large roast chickens. Shred the meat off and whilst you doing that, pan fry an onion (half for 2 people) and take off the heat, then in the pan you had the onion in, tip the onion out and boil up some water, as the water is heating stir in the mayflower curry powder to thicken, the chuck in the cooked onion and the chicken for about 5 mins. Some sultanas also makes a nice addition, it sweetens it and reminds me of the chicken curry we used to get served at school.

Morrisons sell Mayflower but it will be in the aisle where the spices and dried sauce mixes are, usually about £1 a box.

    Hi elantan,

You've had lots of good advice here but maybe this older thread will help you find the missing ingredient:

    Chinese curry sauce recipe?

I'll merge your thread with that one later as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

Believe it or not - I add a tin of mushy peas to curry sauce mix - could that be the missing ingredient?
